Instead he's shipped out and our seventh defender is Duffy, who I love but, well, he's not best suited to Potter's style of play. So with Ostigard being shipped out on loan it suggests he's bellow Duffy, a player deemed not good enough last year, in the pecking order.

You do also need to consider the wage costs, though.

If we keep Ostigaard AND Duffy here for the season, then we have to pay all of both salaries.

If budget constraints mean that we don't wish to allocate funds to pay the full salaries of TWO covering CBs, then one needs to go on loan. If nobody wants to take Duffy, that affects your decision making.

Ostigaard suggested he chose a loan over a squad place this season, because he really just wants to play football. It is possible that this was the deciding factor at the end of the day.

Beyond the budget considerations we get more out of loaning Ostigard out for the season to continue his development than leaving him here to sit on the bench most weeks. If Potter thought he was ready to be a serious consideration for the starting XI this season there is no way he'd have been loaned out. They've spotted something that needs further development and it's better that he gets this playing week in week out in the Championship than sitting on the bench here, getting a few mins at the end of games and the occasional run out in the cups.

Like in the Coca Cola Cup tie against Villa, when the diminutive centre back scored with a back post header aged 17? As you say probably waaay too risky.

As Rochdale found at times last season. There's probably a reason he is bulking up in the gym too (and good luck to him).

That's true. I hadn't thought of that.

Although...

presumably Duffy is on considerably more than Ostigard? So if Ostigard is considered by the club to be a better prospect than Duffy and we're willing to pay Duffy's full wage would it be possible to find a club willing to take Duffy and pay at least the equivalent of Ostigard's wage towards it. That way we'd have the better player and would have the equivalent of Ostigard's wages off the books.

I don't know the inner workings of the football business so have no idea how likely the above scenario would be. It seems entirely possible from my amateur outside view but who knows?

Edit: Just seen the post suggesting Ostigard chose the loan option over a squad place. That'd go someway to explaining it!

Still only 19 though - can't see him in the team this season. Maybe in an 'easy' cup tie. Maybe.

I agree, but half a season training with the u23s and first team from time to time might do him well. Ben White had a second half of the season loan spell after 6 months within the club so maybe it'll be the same for Roberts. I'm sure the club know what they're doing.

Personally, I'm very comfortable with the prospect of Duffy in the team or on the bench on Saturday. Tales of his demise have been greatly exaggerated in my opinion, he was our player of the season not so long ago.

You obviously haven't read my last half dozen or so posts on my opinion on the next steps for young Roberts! The only difference is I had him down for a whole season with the U23s* and all the coaching benefits which that involves, rather than half a season, before sending him out for his season in the Championship.

*Obviusly with the possibility of a run out in a winnable cup match.

Duffy might be hard to loan out given last years fiasco and isn't likely to develop by playing more/less games. We would also have to stump up most of his wages. Ostigard will certainly develop by playing regular first team football and is a much more marketable item given his success last year and he has already stted that if he's not in the first 18 squad he doesn't want to stay here.

I would be pretty worried if we had such budget constraints that we had to loan out a young player on modest wages to avoid paying two salaries.

Playing on the right of a back three. Doing well again. White mk 2 (even if they’re very different players)

Excelling at a high level so far - great to see - surprised we didn’t keep him as seemed about ready but in the club we must trust…

My one worry with this kind of tactic is just how motivated will players be to stay? We did well to keep White for an extra season, but i can imagine other players feeling utterly no loyalty to us and wanting out at the first ‘bigger club’ interest.
Guess that’s the business model though.

He looked distinctly average with us. I bet your average Brighton fan hasn’t even heard of him.

However, having been touched by the genius of Michael O'Neill at a big club, he looks like a world beater. Once a player gets a sniff of the Potteries, they don’t want to play anywhere else. I fear that he’ll want to sign for them permanently.

If we get £50M for him in 2023, who's worrying? Roberts and Tsongui will be up and running by then.
