Not that Serie A is the same level as the PL, but it does seem odd that he's not good enough for us but good enough for Napoli.

I don't think it's a case of not good enough for us, he's young and wants guaranteed playing time. We can't offer that with the other talent we have.

Not if his contract ends in June!

(I don't know if it does but when he joined in July 2019 a three year deal would have been very likely)

We've got an option to extend for 1 year i think until 2023 - hence a fee if we sell.

I'm starting to wonder about this buy - develop - loan - sell policy now. It's great to have so many of our young players playing at decent levels of football on loan - but have we got the end-game right? e.

Ben White, Sanchez, Alzate, Caicedo, MacAllister is by all accounts an outstanding crop via this route over the last 2-3 years.

We've only sold one out of five!

Seriusly, it's great that the other four have made it through to the first team - it's more at the lower level I'm questioning - the young players we buy and sell for very little, or give away when their contracts run down. No need to jump in to defend the club, I'm quite aware and appreciative of the success stories, and of course every youngster we buy (often for several million pounds these days) won't make the first team or go for mega-bucks - but some teams have got some very good bargains from us of late.

£3M for Ostigard (with, I would hope, a very respectable sell on clause) seems about the right sort of level we should be looking to operate at. I suspect there'll be a few departures this summer (but not as many as some seem to think - I don't think the new loan limits will affect us that much) so it will be interesting to see (in as much as we ever know the actual numbers) how well we do in terms of getting a return on our investment.

.

Isn’t the whole point of the model that it’s designed to produce both a pipeline to the first team and / or some flagship sales. Hence my list. It’s done both in spades. Of course there will be players who we release and don’t end up in the first team squad and we sell for “small” amounts. Thats to be expected.
PS yes Coventry have done well with Gyokeres . Although there was nothing to suggest he’d score 17 goals this season. Anyone else ?
(It’s not about defending the club - I’m just struggling to see the flaws you’re trying to highlight.)

Indeed.

Our model is to generate big fees on a small number of players, decent fees on some others, hopefully at least break even on most, and minimise losses on those that don't work out.

Also to get 1st team players for minimal fees.

Sell on fees are absolutely crucial in our model so we don't miss out too badly on the Normanns, the Matejus and the Gyokeres-es.

Cook was annoying in that Bournemouth never sold until it was on a free - so our sell on was useless in the end - but you really do win some and lose some.

It is inevitable that bad buys and cheap sales get disproportionate attention, but we are really doing fantastically overall.

Given that we sold Knockaert to Fulham for £10m+ - for example there’s a little bit of making a lot out of the molehill here and missing the mountain but yep, aware we’ve agreed to let a few players each season go for small fees or free transfers. And ? Your point is - we could have sold them for more ? (To who ? )

Yes, you have grasped my point, entirely!

(and yes, we got away with one with Knocky!)

Haven’t they only offered £3m apparently we want £7m.

Well, that's most likely more than we'll get/got for Baluta, Molumby, Gyokeres, O'Hora and Walton put together, so perhaps the plan (as far as the lower level business is concerned) is starting to produce results.

So good against Sweden tonight, 10 min to go but regardless of what happens he is man of the match by a mile. Feels a little bit sad that he won't stay, going to be top class.

Not sure why we would be entertaining any transfer negotiations for him at this point, until we've seen him in our pre-season and how he fits in with our players.

He apparently wanted guaranteed game time last season which is why he went back out on loan, rather than sit on the bench as cover like Roberts ended up doing. If he still wants that then he’s unlikely to be a player who is happy with how Potter rotates and changes squads around and it doesn’t sound like something we’d offer to an untried player at PL level anyway.

We need to move him on now or he’ll be a free agent at the end of the coming season (assuming there are no further options on his contract).
