Reports from Italy now saying Napoli want a loan with an obligation to buy, but we are holding firm for a £5m permanent transfer now.

Sounds like Napoli are messing us around a bit.

Leo should perhaps also think about if he really wants to move to a club that won't pay a very modest fee for someone they sign to be a starter in the team.

He's out of contract at the end of the season isn't he? Why would they pay for someone that was ut of contract? Or are they just proposing to sign him now and pay next year?

Yeah, he's out of contract at the end of the season, but the transfer date could be before the end of his contract. I think the transfer window usually opens mid-June and contracts run until the end of June.

Ah. so the contract would be a loan for the season and a legal obligation to buy him for x million on say June 16th 2023? Presumably if they reneged and waited until his contract ran out we could then sue them for the x million.

Obligation to buy means they can't renege. The loan would convert to a permanent on a fixed date.

This baffles me, £5m doesn't sound much for a regular starter especially considering they could lose him to another club who make a better offer to him next summer.

Perhaps they've looked at the going rate for players from Brighton's academy (round about £1M or less - with the obvious exception of Ben White, of course) and expected the same sort of deal as Coventry, West Brom, Hearts, Fortuna Sittard, Hull City etc, and not to be asked for five times as much? ......................for a player with one year left on his contract too (I think).

Östigård is a reasonably experienced player who has proven himself in the Serie A. Max Sanders, Ryan Longman, George Cox etc. had accomplished close to nothing when they left the club. £300k for Sanders is excellent, for Östgård it isn't... and if Napoli believe otherwise, they won't be able to sign the player.

He has a personal agreement with Napoli and I'm sure he that is his preferred option. But with Torino and Lazio waiting in the wings, I don't think he would mourn too long. Either Napoli pay up or someone else will.

The lad wants to play, I get that, but they all do. Leo has just been a bit more public about it.

At the end of the day someone's got to offer the required amount. I think we should hold out for what we think he's worth.. He's got senior international experience.

I get the risks of him leaving for free, but there's always January for another shot at a sale, we've got to show we won't be lowballed for up and coming talent.

As far as the player is concerned he may soon have to decide between accepting a move to a club which isn't his first choice or fighting it out with a lot of players for a place in our team

Didn't mention or refer to Sanders. Was referring to successful EFL, SPL or Eredivisie players who left us. Different ball game.
