Way out West
I'm not quite sure which city I'd rather be in out of Bologna and Genoa. Different qualities, but both brilliant.

Not been to Bologna, but we did New Year in Genoa a few years ago - fantastic city (parts rather gritty, but fascinating nonetheless). Great historic centre and port. Good beaches to the east of the city, and beautiful seaside walks around Quinto al Mare and Nervi.

Genoa is mercantile and, yes, as you say quite earthy in parts (which I like). Bologna is much more contained, and a completely different pace of life (it's one of the founding slow towns), but is as delightful a central Italian medieval city you'll find (Siena rivals it for me). Great food too. Whack it on your list.

Definitely Bologna for me. Genoa great base but a bit too gritty down the port area for me.’I was in Bologna in October…… super place.

Love Bolonga, was out there in November for the England / San Marino game - as I was in 2013. Great little city, easy to get around, amazing food, nice studenty culture / vibe.

Even in Serie B you see teams playing in big old classic grounds with barely anyone in it

Perhaps it's only the PL that counts people who aren't actually there?

I was in Ferrara, another city in Emilia Romagna, just over the Po from the Veneto Region, with a mate in 2014. We went to see Franz Ferdinand in the castle square, and met up with his brother, who lives in Bologna. That was a lovely place - very warm, but dry heat, so not humid unlike Venice, where we'd come from. We had an excellent lunch, then sat in the square by the cathedral drinking vermouth before the concert. On the way back to the station the next day, we passed SPAL's stadium. They were struggling in Serie C at the time, but managed to get up to Serie A for a couple of seasons, and even beat Juventus 2-1. We noticed the huge stand behind the goal (Google Curva Ovest), and I looked them up - their fans are nutcases, at least the Ultras are, but in a way that they're genuinely supporting their team. I vaguely followed them for a couple of seasons when one could see Italian football on TV. They're now back in Serie B.

By the seaside in West Somerset
Could make his Serie A debut today for Genoa away to Sasuolo.
Genoa have let in 37 goals in 19 games this season. Ostigard should lend a bit of steel
