I am in Tokyo and visited the Edo-Tokyo Museum today. Tokyo is an applicant city for 2016. They had a small display of stuff from the last time they hosted it. The Nippon Budokan is a cool venue and their logo was pretty cool. The posters advertising the event looked bloody good as well.

Did not see the ceremony, I'm suffering from the effects of seeing the previous 8 or 9 opening ceremonies. They are usually mindless, incomprehensible and too long. It's just a chance for the host nation to show off.....yawn

I was thinking about this last night - the ceremony is there to celebrate the history of the country.... what could we put in it?? All I could think of was:

Exploration history
Commonwealth (which i'm not too sure we'd be celebrating owning the majority of the world at one stage, wouldn't be very 'olympic')
General wars with everyone!!

Can anyone else think of more?!

I reckon that things will go this way..... it will be announced by the LOCOG something like this....

" In a way of celebrating the traditional values and ideals of the Olympic Games, London will have a low budget but poignant opening ceremony. The LOCOG wish to make the maximum funding available for the athletes, facilities and infrastucture. "

which means
A, we are well over budget so far.

B, we can't screw anymore from our " Games Parters" ( McDonalds,Pepsi etc)

C, We can't match anything the Chinks did

remember "It's a Knockout" when they did the International rounds ? .... and we had the cheapest, crappiest round compared to all the others !......well thats the way its going

Just far enough away from LDC
Did anyone read the Andrew Gilligan piece in the Standard last night? Quite rightly he commented that London shouldn't try and match the Beijing launch as the most populous country and a communist 'democracy' to boot means no planning rules, plenty of cash. loads of cheap workers etc

China have spent £21billion est and we hear so much snivelling on this country of our £9billion budget (which by 4 years time we be equiv of a third of this years spend).

Live with it - we wont match it we will need to be different. Lets make the athletes the focus.

Besides as London is planned as a carbon neutral games, we certainly cant have that amount of fireworks going off. It's very bad for the environment.
