It depends upon where they would / might start but I suppose you could look at their history in Europe before writing them off as potential challengers.

However with access to Sky, BT etc. money they would be up there challenging given their 40,000 / 50,000 season ticket holders and sponsorship.

In addition, any club wherever with access to similar rewards/funding would probably do pretty well.

Do they do well in Europe? I don’t ever remember them getting very far in recent years.

I’d imagine the deal would be they get told they are coming into the league at the start of x season. Let’s assume they get a season’s notice. They can borrow against their upcoming PL income, but that gets them £100m. Do they have a squad that can compete when they get a few £20m players, a couple of £10m and increase some wages? Most top-end Championship teams struggle in the first few seasons, so I suppose it depends if we think the top of the SPL is a higher level than the top of the Championship?

Celtic and Rangers got to the final of the UEFA Cup in 2003 and 2008. Rangers reached the last 16 last season, and Celtic were the first British club to win the European Cup. Aberdeen won a European trophy back in the day as well.
If they had Premier league money as well, they would be a very competitive in the top flight.

Living up here now it's interesting seeing how all the ex Albion players have got on...Duffy's had an absolute nightmare, Neil Lennon somehow managed to ruin his career in the space of 6 months, such a shame as he was brilliant for us under Hughton. Meanwhile Goldson has been brilliant at Rangers, the fans love him, Balogun has also done well but isn't a regular starter. Conway also isn't getting much game time for double cup winners St Johnstone but Jamie Murphy came off the bench for Hibs in the final and looked good Gary Dicker is still playing for Kilmarnock but they've just been relegated. I might of missed a couple but basically apart from Goldson most of these players if they came back to England would be League 1/2.

I don’t have anywhere near your level of confidence. I assume nobody from those UEFA finals are still in the squad, and you are effectively saying that their history means they’d be a force in the Prem. I contend that they would struggle to survive at all. I agree they would be competitive if they lasted a few seasons, but there are a lot of historically successful clubs that would struggle if you just dropped them into the Prem.

Surely we look at their squad rather than their historic results? Of course, they might up their game for Euro matches, just as we would, but over the course of a season I think they would really struggle.

They should need to start at L2 and progress through they would walk L2 L1 and it might take them 2/3 seasons to get out of the championship due to having to play competitive games twice a week which they don’t have currently after that they would certainly be a force in the prem given a level footing financially would be capable of challenging for Europe

so did Fulham in 2010, and Forest won the European cup twice since Aberdeen. no reason why performance many decades ago has any bearing on their competitiveness today.

Who is going to vote for them to come to English football?

EFL clubs won’t because potentially Rangers and Celtic might take away a promotion place in the Championship. So why do it if you are Forest, Fulham, Boro, Bournemouth etc.

Clubs such as the Albion, Palace, Burnley won’t do it because the Old Firm could get to the PL at their expense. Presently there’s a fair chance of 1-2 clubs who are promoted being relegated within a couple of years e.g. Huddersfield, Sheff Utd, Norwich, Fulham, West Brom. Rangers and Celtic are less likely for that to happen so therefore those clubs who do tend to finish 15th-17th risk going down themselves.

The ‘Greedy Six’ don’t want further competition for Champions League places. They’ve already stitched up TV deals so they get a bigger share, but are nervous about clubs with wealthy owners such as Villa, Everton (potentially Newcastle too with a rich owner) challenging for top four slots which the G6 see as being there’s as a ‘right’. They would fear the two Glasgow clubs as being further potential competition domestically.

As for their boorish fans, apart from the local Wetherspoons who wants their company. Sectarian obsessives in both clubs and whilst they would certainly bring 3,000 fans to most away games that’s already the case quite often already anyway. The additional revenue from a few more ticket sales would be offset by increased security costs anyway.

Manchester 2008 is enough to put me off the thought of Rangers turning up in Brighton.
