Strange how the whole KA site was developed around those steps. I also would have wrongly thought KA was built before Viceroy Lodge, if I'd been asked. Must be just a few years in it.

I have worked in Viceroy Lodge many times and knew it was an old building, I saw the flats when I first looked at your photo but didn't realise it was VL at first, probably because of the houses to the right.

The photo you posted is that taken from Courtney Gate?

Same line of view. I live between there and....
I think it might be from St Aubyn Mansions built 1899 on seafront now looking over the Boxing Gym by the kA Trampolins and Crazy Golf.

Just looking at that picture of "Daddy Long-legs" - the single lifeboat that probably managed 10 - they weren't very good back in those [Titanic] days of getting this H&S aligned.

Not a postcard as such, but a lovely photo of The West Pier at night taken in 1967, it's how I remember it from my youth.

I can recall being driven past there circa 1967 with M&D + us 3 kids.
My big sister [~11 y/o] commented along the lines of "Poo, what a stink of gas!"
Mum replies: "Breathe through your mouth then."
To which big-sis retorts: "But then it tastes horrible!"

I don't really remember my Gran (she died when I was 4), but my Mother used to say that Gran insisted the best cure for Hooping Cough was some deep breath's of the Gas Works air!
And no, she didn't die of gas poisoning.

Back to the photo. The concrete steps to the left of the bus are still there today. Can anyone say where they are?

It still upsets me to this day how The West Pier has ended up, such a shame. As a child The Palace Pier was always more exciting to go on as it had more amusements, but as I grew up I could appreciate the beauty and elegance of The West Pier captured beautifully by that photo of it at night illuminated by the pastel coloured lighting.


Also had a few trips with my Mum & Dad (as a treat) on the speedboat that used to go between the two piers.

Interesting seeing the adverts on the Clock Tower. They look very 'modern' in their style of design. When did the stop putting adverts up there?

I wonder if the older photo was taken during or just after WW2. The images are not very sharp but some of the people on the right of the picture seem to be in uniform. I don't remember Brighton at this period but in Worthing there were huge adverts asking people to salvage items (what today we call recycling).

I think you are probably right about the year being just after WW2, I've found another photo of it from c1940 (courtesy of mybrightonandhove.org) which shows adverts on it for war bonds.
The full title of it is The Jubilee Clock Tower and it was built in 1888 in celebration of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee the previous year in 1887. The Golden Time Ball on top of it was designed by Magnus Volk and was controlled by land line from Greenwich Observatory, rising Hydraulically up the mast and dropping on the hour. It was originally stopped after complaints about the noise!
