have now entered both the halfmarathon in Feb 2020 and the Marathon in April 2020 :

am currently running 65 70kms a month having run little or not at all since last June:

how many kms a month should i be running in the months leading up to the half marathon :

any advice or encouragement will be welcome : i did a couple of 10km runs in 2007/2008 but this is serious!

please send a link to the best web sites for advice on training if you have anything worth sharing

Hello. I use Runners World training plans for most distances and they work well for me. I have pasted the half marathon plans below; you’ll see plans for various times. The full marathon plans also have different times and abilities and levels of commitment. There’s also reading around how to use them, what to do if you miss runs and the entry level needed to start them I.e how many miles a week you should be running to start one.

I'd forgotten how much marathons whack your physical shape, immune system and mental health.

I have very little enthusiasm at the moment but am ticking over purely because I don't want to "waste" the condition I've built up. A cold has also filled me full of yucky stuff. For three runs in a row I've not been able to run faster than 10 minute miles, though I managed 12 of those this morning and also said hello to [MENTION=15605]knocky1[/MENTION] and his dog.

Still not sure of next steps but I'm not sure they include another marathon any time soon. The training is one thing but the two weeks after aren't much fun either.

It might just be your body telling you that you need a rest! Don't try and push it if it isn't there. It'll all come back – don't worry about having some time out. Get yourself on a trail marathon – completely different animal and a whole lot of fun (and food) :thumbsup:

Bit of a mixed day up at that London yesterday. Great first half, but then had the same hip niggle I picked up at the track a couple of weeks ago, so slowed to a shuffle in the second half and waddled home in 4.11.12. Not the worst, but should have been maybe 15 mins better - strava shows the steep drop-off in pace. Not really too disappointed though as this one was all about the fundraising for the Hospice that looked after my sister last year - with giftaid have managed to raise over £6,000. Completely overwhelmed with the support. I was sat on the grass at Blackheath before the start in absolute pieces - especially when they started with the 'personal stories' stuff on the big screen. I totally lost it.

As always, the event itself - regardless of how your run goes - is utterly magnificent from start to finish. Fantastic organisation, brilliant marshalls, absolutely incredible crowd support every yard of the way (the noise is almost deafening at times, it's remarkable) and some great sights. If you ever get the chance to do it you have to.........................it didn't even feel crowded - I was running at my target pace right from the start line.

Cheers mate and thanks.......didn't worry too much about the blue line, enjoyed high-fiving kids instead so was weaving all over the place. I think if you'd wanted to it wouldn't have been too difficult, it was busy but not stupidly crowded. Probably did the extra mile.......

Just noticed I welcomed [MENTION=12929]sjamesb3466[/MENTION] to the 2020 Brighton marathon field yesterday when I meant [MENTION=1740]loco61[/MENTION].

Advice for 2019 [MENTION=1740]loco61[/MENTION] would be as already said on here. I’d aim to reach 50k weekly by Xmas. Throw in variety. Enter some races. Build in an easier week every month. Get any niggles looked at before running through. Don’t run on sore feet and have 2-3 plus trainers. Good luck.

I would second all this. I loved it, and thought the whole experience was magnificent, in all the ways you've described.
It sounds as if we had a very similar run - I was on pace for my target (3:45) until about 17-18 miles, and then my thighs started cramping in a way I've not experienced before. I struggled on at pace for a bit, and then started getting worried that if I held the pace I'd blow out completely and not finish, so I slowed down for the remaining miles, the pain eased a bit and I finished ok, albeit much slower than target.

However..... it looks as if I've managed to beat you by a magnificent two seconds (4:11:10) :):) .... !

Also, like you, my Strava shows that I did a whole extra mile. I actually found the course quite crowded, and there was a lot of weaving around and moving across the road at various points because of traffic islands, spectator crossing points etc. Mine was even a little bit longer (27.23 miles), and in fact my actual time for completing the "marathon" distance was more or less bang on 4 hours (which is a slight consolation, i suppose). I didn't even know about the 'blue line' till someone told me after the event...

So although, as my second marathon, I got nowhere near my first time at Brighton last year (3:51:33), I'm super happy to have done it just for the experience, which was unlike any other race I've done, partly because of the crowds and support, and partly just because of where you are running - going over Tower Bridge just felt amazing, as did the turn in front of Buckingham Palace for the final sprint, and even the bits that I expected to be the equivalent of the Shoreham power station section in Brighton (Woolwich, the Isle of Dogs etc) had such a volume of spectators and support that you still felt buoyed by the crowd.

Congratulations :bowdown::) Well-deserved victory. I mistyped my time - it was 4.11.59, so you had plenty to spare anyway :laugh:

It's my absolute favourite bit of the route (against some strong competition). When I first did it (2006) the crowds around the Isle of Dogs and Canary Wharf were much thinner - feels like now the whole route is absolutely mobbed from start to finish. The noise all along the embankment in particular was amazing. Great, great day regardless of how the run went really.

You got further than I did yesterday, and doing 5k after a period of inactivity is not to be sniffed at.

It was my first marathon and was completely overwhelmed by the out of this world breathtaking atmosphere. The positive energy and celebratory wall of noise from the crowds throughout the entire route is incredible. It really is an awesome experience. Looking forward to having another crack at it next year.

I know exactly what you mean having done London 6-7 times and had varying experiences - if you're having a crappy time of it the constant 'C'mon, you CAN DO IT' shouts becoming a bit wearing after a while, but replying with '**** off, I know I can, this is my 65th marathon, but my leg hurts a bit.........' seems a bit churlish when people have spent hours in the cold just to offer encouragement, so I tend to just smile and say thanks :)

Yep me too! Knee still a bit iffy, but going to give it my best! :thumbsup: Going up to get race pack tomorrow with my two boys, quite excited!

Well that didn't go to plan! Despite knee injury that stopped me running for the last 5 weeks and meant I pulled out of Brighton, I still thought I had a sub 4 in me! :ffsparr: Went out way too quick for my current fitness with a 1:58 half and then got cramp about mile 16! I never get cramp! All I could manage was a hobble/walk combo for the last 9/10 miles that meant I came in at 4:30. Was very gutted at the time as I had trained hard pre-injury and was nicely on track for sub 4. But now time has passed I am proud to have got round, knee amazingly held up well and I raised close to £8k for a charity very close to my heart https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/JamesWheele2

So thanks to my knee now seeming to be ok, I can get back to some more sensible races, 5 and 10k's for me I think! BTW the physio I saw was outstanding, if anyone needs details as a contact let me know.
[MENTION=15605]knocky1[/MENTION] I should really submit a marathon time for the s/sheet, is it ok to submit the 4:04.32 I ran a few years ago rather than this year's effort!

Well done to all those that did Brighton and London and for those that suffered cramp on the way round I totally feel your pain!
