I've spent the morning with the joys of Strava and Parkrun results for analysing where I went wrong this year. Easy to spot.
120 miles running in 2017.
First 7 weeks of this year 200+ miles and an easy 20:59 Parkrun. Feeling great.
February 21-25 4 days running out of 5 with 5,000' climbing ready for Moyleman taper.
BANG overdone it. Just got ready for a hard Moyleman but not at best.
Then unable to recover, get any fitness and taper in time for BM.
Now I'm a minute or so off February's 5k time. Usually the opposite after a marathon.

Analysis is that I over did it that week in February and have struggled ever since. Good news is I feel a structured month will get me back in form with a late summer sub 20:30 5k the main objective.

Signed up for the Gatwick HM a while ago (anyone else?).

Having just started a new job is thrown my normal running routine in the air. I'm doing one long run at the weekend... Not the best training schedule. Wanted to get a 11 miles or so in yesterday so decided to head to Hove and back. Just as I got to my turn around point I saw the Hove Prom PR had started so I did a "ninja elephant" and joined in at the back.
As I picked my way through the back markers, I tried to pick out some familiar faces ... And I saw one: Joe Wilkingson (off the telly-box!). Tried to catch him but he had too much of a lead. Seems he's a regular down there..I had no idea.

It was 13.5miles by the time I got home ... a real biggie for me. At least I should be able to make it round in a couple of weeks.

The first stepping stone was a bit too high but I'll soon be back on track. I've stopped eating every 30 minutes which is a good sign and I'm able to look at a hill without breaking out in a sweat......

You caught me towards the start of a 10 miler. I'm trying to apply two principles to my long runs at the moment which is to run the second half slightly harder than the first but to then warm down properly and stretch. Managed all that today. Worthing 10K training will therefore consist of speedwork in the week, long negative split run on Sunday and maybe the odd parkrun to baseline my pace. My only aim for Worthing is to run sub 50 having done 50.28 at BM10K. I had the same aim last year but under training meant [MENTION=474]Mr Blobby[/MENTION] flew past me while I was having a sneaky walk. I said walk.

Good to hear it's all coming back. Yes, bike and pool are fighting for my attention now - no long runs in the training plan for a while. Which is good because the 27 miles on the bike was tough!

From a (safe) distance I wondered about your 2018 schedule and that it might have 'costs'. I speak from the experience of piling on the miles last autumn and doing the slightly insane Velothon marathon - the equivalent of running 26.2 miles with one leg shorter than the other. This really took the wind out of my sails and slowed down my 5k times plus made me more injury prone at an age when it just takes longer for the healing process to take place. So I'm pleased that I (think) I've put this behind me and will now try to attack the 5k AG with a bit of verve. So it's good to hear that you'll be regrouping.
BTW wasn't there also some talk of you (and others?) have a go at a triathlon? I found that when I tackled a few duathlons a few years back it resulted in some improved running times and no injuries. So maybe that's something to factor in to your structured training?

As to triathlons my first one is 2 months away against a man who says he can't swim, (mind games) @Penney's Harmonica and the second against him and a rival from school. Leeds Castle and Bewl Reservoir.
Maybe I'll come over for a Worthing Parkrun over the next few weeks.

That was about the last time I swam. A naturally heated, outdoor pool, in freezing weather in Iceland. Beautiful. I swim like I run marathons, Crawl.

We may have to beg to not run leg 4 in Weakest Link as it's 5 days before The first Tri.
Slow your running pace till the calf feels good. It will stop you otherwise.

Looking forward to tomorrow afternoons 6 x 600m intervals. With 30mph gusts on the Prom will be doing 3 Eastwards at near 6" mile pace and 3 Westwards approaching 8" pace. Must make sure I finish going East............

We'll get the red carpet dry cleaned in anticipation! I won't commit to the Worthing 10K (or anything really) until I'm confident that I'm OK calf-wise. Over the past couple of years I've tended to do events where you can just rock (or limp) up on the day. Those tri events sound as though they are in fantastic settings. Are you digging out an old bike or investing in something new and carbon? I'm another member of the Sink-Like-a -Stone swimming club so no tris for me. But a tri relay is good fun..............as long as you don't get stuck with the swim leg.
