I think this is a great thread, lots of good tips and some very fast people! I am signed up (actually I haven't but intend to) for my first half marathon in Belgium, Ypres to Popperinge. My goal is 2 hours and I am following a "My Asics" program. I really like the plan although some jogs seem so slow it's s hard to go that slow. Before I would always try to run as fast as I can. Already I have seen improvements. Has anyone else tried My Asics and if so how have they found it?

Only downside is that it's stopped working on my iPad but fine on laptop and iPhone.

Your wife is talking sense you should give your self time to recover,your times are telling you that you are still not well.Medical opinion constantly says you should not race during or recovering from illness it can prove fatal this is especially relevant considering your age and weight.You are not setting a precedent you are just being sensible.I used to run to a good standard and no one I ran with would consider running in the same situation,why take a risk and cause your wife to worry.

I agree with you but I bet it won't be the first time he has made his wife worry! There is a rule that if symptoms are above the neck its OK but below such as the chest then it is a no no. fitness levels would come into it as well. early days 11 months still before the marathon.

El Pres, I would ignore the input from your Mrs and head to the start line and give it a go - assuming, of course you feel like it. There is always the option of dropping out, but you'll never know how you feel unless you give it a go.

Currently laid up with osteitis pubis after 3 injury free years. 2014 plans, culminating in SDW100, all buggered. Currently in week 12 of non-running but hope to be back to light duties soon, with Beachy Head marathon (the UKs best) a realistic target if I can't do one before then. Marshalling the Burgess Hill 10k this Monday, and will be bellowing encouragement at the Three Forts mentalists on Sunday. Good thread.

El Pres, I would ignore the input from your Mrs and head to the start line and give it a go - assuming, of course you feel like it. There is always the option of dropping out, but you'll never know how you feel unless you give it a go.

Took your advice Greg. Managed to persuade the good lady wife I wasn't too ill although far from healthy. Paced myself in first couple of km mainly due to the course being so congested (3,000 runners) and kept plodding to finish in 57:27. It's slow compared to many others but a PB for me being my first proper race and I'm on a high.

This thread is very useful. Will enrol for a few more now over the summer. Cheers guys!

Excellent news, well done. That's still a decent time, considering you weren't at 100% and it was your first race, etc. Onwards and upwards :thumbsup:

My 5th Three Forts Marathon yesterday (27.2 miles, 3450 feet of climb).

My first time sub 5 hours, watch time is 4.57.58. Halstead Marathon next Sunday.

Very wise running. Not at your best. Hold back a bit and your PB is there to be smashed next time.

I forgot to mention the Brookes Brighton 10k is on November 16. I have entered and will then use that time to work out all marathon training pace times: recovery, easy, long, speed, strength and endurance.
Then I'm planning 4 weeks with Mrs Knocky walking from Jiri to Everest Base Camp and back. Done it before and it is brilliant high altitude base training. 6-8 hours strenuous walking every day. Then Christmas on the beach in Kerala.

Unfortunately will have to watch The Albion's Premiership battles from hotel rooms..........

Just got back from my Downham 20 circuit and I ran it in 2.18 dead and 6.53. Pace. That beats any run I've ever done in my opinion, pace, heart rate avg 157 never went above 187. Attacked the hills controlled the straights and had to find the bottle of water I hid last week at 9 as the shop was shut! Happy days
 




Dilemma: This Sunday was meant to be Marathon 75 at Bewl Reservoir, but a family commitment has put paid to this.

Anyone on NSC want to take my place?

I then entered Weald marathon, before the Forest game, thinking that there was no way the Albion would qualify for the playoffs let alone Wembley. It's on Wembley Final Day!

I've managed to push my weekly 21k run out to 26k in 2:39:58 and felt very leggy after. No cardiovascular issues and confidence was good. I know repetition is good for me to build stamina and confidence, so will repeat for a good few weeks, then attempt 32k/20 miles :)

Last week's 19.3 mile personal best distance jaunt served me well going into today's 13.1mile/21k trot, which was knocked off in a shade under two hours three minutes :) Sub 2 hours being my next target :ohmy:

Good effort on both runs. Running 19+ miles is tough work so hats off. I'm sure the next time you run a half you will knock off the 3 minutes comfortably.

Time to bounce this bad boy now that I've finally completed my first marathon.

26.2 miles. That's a bloody long way that is.

Ha ha. Well done, and it IS a long way.

Spare a thought for Mrs Bobkin and everyone else that did the Moonwalk the other weekend in London. The route was actually figured as 29 miles, when it should have just been standard marathon distance.

I've got a 5-litre (bag capacity) salomon s-lab hydration pack for £50 if anyone's interested?

Never been used (bought in error, wanted the 12 litre and lost the receipt). It came with 2 water bottles that I've nicked, so you'd have to buy either a hydration bladder, or 2 bottles for it. Cost me £120
