not the time to tell you I did 21 miles this morning then? Took me 2 hours and 50 minutes. Decided it would be my last long run and will be doing much shorter and slower runs from here on in...I will hold back from now on, just wanted to push myself one last time. Off work for the next 2 weeks so will be getting plenty of rest. I'm not planning on walking at all, far from it...FFS Murray!

Me neither having done 20 miles at 2:35. Got me (stupidly) excited about the prospect of a sub 3:30, whereas in reality, I'd just be happier just to get sub 4.
knocky1 Thanks for the tips, and I'll try to adjust my last bits of training to that schedule. My problem is I have difficulty running that slow. Sounds odd maybe, but I seem to level out at just under 8 min mile pace, as I did this morning.

7.18 and Greg Bobkin I am jealous. You both have a 3 and a half hour marathon ability. For me it will be a plod around Hove Park tomorrow morning as a warm up for Sunday's 15 miler. My other training tip favoured by Usain Bolt is to spend the night with 3 of the Swedish womens handball team during race week.

Having run almost 350 miles in 2013 with no injuries at all I appear to be suffering from shinsplints or at least very painful shins. I'm taking a few days off and hoping for the best.

Did you run those 350 miles on the same shoes? I used to suffer from them quite badly, and just changing my shoes helped a lot.

I bought some nike excellerate+ air max's, with the big air bubble in the heel and haven't suffered from them since.

You probably know all about shoes and shinsplints though!

Done just over 20 miles this afternoon, a couple of days ahead of schedule, the weather was nice, and my legs feel pretty much OK now, so I am chuffed with that. Plus it means I don't have to spend the weekend now with 20 miles looming over me (had originally pencilled it in for Monday).

A few shorter runs over the next two weeks and hopefully I'll make it round

No. I have changed shoes quite recently. Don't think it's that. Managed 8 miles relatively comfortably this evening so fingers crossed should be ok.

I'm guessing your doing the Brighton marathon? I've just started training for for the Chicago marathon in October,I'm only up to 13 miles! :(

I hope 3:30 is on - would be amazing. Not sure how Mrs B would feel about the Swedish handball trio, but I'll give it a shot!

Best of luck to you. The Brighton marathon course is not a particularly fast route, though each year the organisers are tweaking it, to make it faster. For instance this year the elite will start at Withdean stadium & will not have to run round Preston Park (hill), with the masses. All three years I have run the Brighton marathon, the weather has been perfect (too warm), with no wind. If we get a typical spring day with westerlies the course can add 15 minutes to a PB. For me, I use Brighton as my last training marathon, for one within the following month, if I am seeking to run fast. This year I will be going for it in Copenhagen, May.

Boston, USA was my PB sub 3:30. Run more than 10 marathons in 3:30s too, but don't be upset if you don't PB Brighton. Having run more than 60 marathons, Brighton is great for atmosphere & crowds. As for times - look elsewhere.

Fully agree that 3:30 is a possibility but maybe not this time. Fingers crossed that the weather is favourable on the day. For me I did Hove Park run this morning with the intention of running marathon pace but could not hold back and easily did 7:20 miles. After 4 weeks out I may break 4 hours but happy to be back running.

After a good 20 mile run last week felt great then a pain developed in my shin and upper thigh - tried a 6 miler on Wednesday trying to run it off. Now have quite a severe pain making me limp. I think it may be stress fracture as I can't hop. Going to rest until tuesday then will maybe try it out. Any physios know if it may be possible to run or should I defer ? (pain in bum as I have done the hard bit!)

Is it on outside of thigh and shin with maybe some pain on outside of knee? It could be IBS, illibotial band syndrome (google it). This is a ligament running length of leg. Sports injury massage may sort it out at £35. I now do the seated pigeon stretch after every run and unlike previous years my IB has been OK. Be careful of stretching on self diagnosis as its easy to make it worse. Hope you recover whatever it is.

Got this pre-marathon kit in the post today from my charity, have run all 3 previous Brighton Marathons for Right To Play and plan to continue as long as they will have me! I'm off work this week and next (Easter Holidays) and feeling really useless sitting around the house not doing much. Did 9 miles on Tuesday but keep telling myself to rest and get to 100% is probably better than doing many more runs. Think I might do 13 on Saturday, another 9 on Tuesday and then rest until the big day?

Doctor friend of mine who is a marathon runner, told me you have to be careful of shin splints/ stress fractures as they can lead to breaks in extreme cases if you continue to run on them!

Got head cold Sunday evening. Perfect timing as started after long run and should be gone by this weekend and definitely by marathon time. I will be doing 7 pints of Harveys around the Leicester game (last drink before Marathon), followed by an easy 12m Sunday, a 7m Tuesday and a bit of flaffing around on the seafront in the preceding days.

sounds very similar to my prep that I had planned out - 13 saturday morning, 9 on Tuesday, and a couple of miles in the preceding days...I'm finding the hardest thing at the moment trying to balance out the nerves/confidence and get myself ready mentally...each of the past 3 years I just ran and hoped for the best, this is the first year I've been timing myself in training and am running intervals...

I started running last October as had started to turn into a bit of a couch potato and was piling on weight and as I am approaching my 50th birthday I decided I needed to get fit. I downloaded the '5K Runner' app to my iphone and built up to running 5k every 2 days. I also joined up with my local Park Run which I do on Saturdays if I am not working or off to an away game. I have successfully lost almost 2 stone in weight combined with a sensible eating plan. Now I have a problem as I have recently developed pain in my right knee - it started after a run with quite a sharp pain in my knee cap when I bend it, I have also noticed a kind of 'tightness' directly behind the knee cap. I have tried resting it for first of all a week and then the second time 2 weeks as well as using a tubular support bandage and ibuprofen to reduce inflammation. There is no sign of any swelling or bruising and I did not fall or stumble at any point while I was running. I have a good pair of supportive trainers (£100 Asics!) which I bought after having a gait analysis done. I have been to a doctor who has looked at it and could not see anything obvious - he has prescribed me some stronger anti-inflammatory tablets. I went out for a run again the other day and the funny thing is that my knee is fine while I am actually running and there is no pain but later in the day and the following days I have this pain in the knee cap. I also bent down and 'listened' to my knee the other day as I bent it and noticed a crunching noise a bit like some one walking across a gravel drive in heavy boots but I also noticed this noise from my left knee which I do not get any pain from. Is this noise normal or does it indicate wear or damage of some kind? Any recommendations as to how I cure this problem? I really don't want to give up the running as firstly I really enjoy it, secondly it is helping me keep my weight down and thirdly it is free! With all the other stuff I do and expenses I really don't have the money to pay to go to the gym or swimming etc. The other thing was I really wanted to build up to entering a marathon but can't see that happening if this problem continues.

Can you not see a specialist in knees? Sure your doctor could refer you. Also put your knee on ice for an hour after your run. I have to with my left knee, it stops it swelling.

Perfectly normal to feel the pain later in the day also, when the adrenalin wears off that's when you feel it. Or so I'm told.

Cars, Well done on the running. It's runners knee. I got it in mid January after upping mileage too quickly. same diagnosis. I had sports injury massage and was 100% in 3 days. Mine was caused by tight central quads. Runners knee can caused by a number of problems as it is the misalignment of the knee causing pain and inflammation. One £35 session would let you know where you stand or you can rest.
Interesting that mine went after buying new inners and yours with new trainers. Maybe we should have worn them in gradually?
