2017 - not my highest mileage year ever, but only 46 miles short of it. Most pleasing thing is a year free of any significant injuries. Roll on 2018 and some fresh challenges (unfinished business). Thanks to everyone on thisthread for making it such a friendly and helpful place. Best thread on NSC by miles (or km if you're a remainer, obviously) :laugh:

Incredible year of running, how many marathons? Are you on the case for 2,000 miles this year or do you have specific events in mind?

Including the Weakest Link relay, obviously. :thumbsup:

Think it was 10, plus a 50 miler

Focus this year is on longer stuff. Really want a sub 24hr 100 miles, so having another go at SDW in June and have also got a reserve 100 mile event in October. Would like to have a go at a 24 hour lap/track event too........5ks can do one [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Morning everyone. So, Day 2 of marathon training (splish sploshing in the rain and mud at 6am) and I’ve decided my Garmin needs updating. I currently have a 210 which is a very basic model which is very old and now falling apart. . I’d like to get something a bit more snazzy which

1) Doesn’t take an eternity to locate the GPS satellites. This is a real bug bear at the start of races.
2) Can do all that snazzy stuff where I can post Google maps of my runs hopefully with my iPhone.
3) Tots up my stats again with my iPhone.

I switched from Garmin to Suunto, now using an Ambit 3 Peak. Finds satellite almost immediately, can synch to movescount (Sunnto's own data/analysis software - I tend to use strava for most analysis now anyway) and then this can be auto-synched to strava (including on phone using bluetooth). Battery life is massive (I can do a week's running - ie every day - away from home without charging it). Recommended.

That's a whole other kind of crazy dedication!

I've got THE most basic Garmin Forerunner 10 and I've TODAY learnt how to use the Laps function! :lolol: That's going to be very handy for me 200m sprints session today!

Word of mouth mainly - tons of feedback on various running sites. To be honest I don't think there is much to choose between similar spec manufacturers.........similar devices do very similar things but having now experienced Suunto I think it's marginally better for me. It does, of course, have a huge range of features that I'll never use !

If you want to stick with Garmin, the Forerunner 235 is excellent. Finds GPS almost instantly and connects via Bluetooth to upload to the Garmin app on your phone. Definitely recommended (by others on here as well).

Another 235 reccomender here.

IMO the HR function is needed for Marathon training to ensure that you do your recovery runs and long runs at a low enough HR.

Man flu so time on my hands. Last years 5K table based on Age Grade over 70% for season Best. Puts the Super Egos where they belong.

Climbing.
Last week I made a successful steady assault on the Strava weekly altitude table. This week I notice our friend in New Zealand has returned to his normal training, there has been hill activity around Hangleton, Snakey and Withdean, a boggy Brown Willy attempt and a jump in NSC Strava altitude gains in general.

I'll be sitting back this week with the man flu but will aim for 14 miles and 1,600' on Sunday. Just enough for a mid table finish this week. With the Moyleman in just 10 weeks looking forward to climbing in training. Only downside is feeling leggy for Parkrun.

On NSC for over two decades...
Looks like I'm going to be off Strava for a little while, as my watch is being sent off for repairs (to Romania of all places). I'll still be running of course, and I'm glad this has happened at the start of the marathon training rather than when the distances are ramping up, as I have routes which should just about cover the required distances without needing accuracy - the intervals might be a bit tricky though!
