Agreed. The problem I have at the moment is that I’m pushing hard at most Parkruns (although not yesterday) as I’d love to get a sub-20, but I’ve signed up for a marathon so I’m running longer distances too. In the last seven days I’ve run 19km, 28km, 11km, two Parkruns and two rest days. I don’t think aiming for both goals at once is realistic. I need to start taking Parkruns easier, maybe just having a shot at a PB once a month, and focus on getting closer to marathon distance. Otherwise you’re right, something will go wrong and I’ll end up doing neither.

Really sensible plan.......a flat out parkrun once a month or thereabouts in your marathon training programme would be ideal, both as an effort session and as a useful fitness benchmark. If you’re following a decent mixed programme (ie with a fair amount of speedwork) you’ll still find your 5k speed improving - the marathon training does wonders for your speed endurance which helps you hang on to a higher pace for longer.

Inspired by the Badger, I've looked up my first 5k times on Runkeeper. First ever 5km just out and back on the seafront was 26:34 in August 2013. Then there was a break until April 2014 in 27:04, starting just after 7am. Then the next recorded 5km was 26:47, starting just after 6am. My first 5km around Hove Park (not the parkrun course, but outside laps) was 26:32. That was May 2014 when I jumped onto Strava and June 2014 is when I was introduced to parkrun at Preston Park and ran 23:37. My first Hove Park parkrun was in 2015, 20:29 absolutely flat out (a certain @Big Nuts ran 19:37 that day, the other Stuart (sorry, I forget the username to go with the man!) ran 19:58, @Greg Bobkin ran 21:35, @Simgull ran 22:11 and @Ben Elton's Brother ran 24:50). I ran it twice in 2016 and now 26 in 2017!

If you go into training log in Strava, you can see all your historic runs, it's superb for context! My biggest week is 61 miles, I started last year with two consecutive 50 mile weeks but I think I ramped too quickly so I'm going to be a bit calmer to start the year!

Pembury is the name you're searching for. My 5k history started with a couple of sub 19s in 1995 followed by a 12 year rest when I stumbled upon Parkrun.

New Year Resolution. Aim to get legs like @Greg Bobkin

On the back of the trekking workout I have moved onto hilly workouts to continue to build muscle and endurance. Running 4.5 miles uphill at 10-11 minute mile pace and then jog downhill home. Finding it easy and breathing is fine. Only difficulty is making up on the downhill as I cannot pick up pace on the tired legs. Sure that will come and just sitting back and relaxing for the present.
Gentle Hove Parkrun Saturday and 11 miles on the Downs Sunday.

Finally ready for mileage and enjoying it.

On NSC for over two decades...
I've been having a break from running over Christmas, chiefly to give my tight hamstring a rest, but also because I have a nasty chest cold and because I enjoy stuffing my face for a few days!

Anyway, running is still in my mind with marathon training starting soon, and I've just spent some time this morning putting up the medal rack Mrs Orange got me for Christmas - it is very motivating to see the medals presented nicely... and the empty gap at one end!

How many of us are running the Brighton Marathon 2018?

BM 10k again for me next year. Enjoyed it last year despite the cost and the decision paid off as ran sub 40 for the first time, then basked in the sun and drunk beer, whilst the poor marathon sods roasted.

Never once felt like I made the wrong decision on the build up last year, but already im starting to feel like I want to give the marathon another crack.

Anyway, I’m well up for long runs in the build up if there was a Nsc training run at some stage.

It's about time you put a marathon time in the league table, I'm going to be aiming for sub-3 and to hell with the consequences!

I'm going to dig out a training plan and then see what happens next. There will be a few 5k races thrown in I'm sure, plus the Worthing Half and possibly the Brighton Half if I can nab a place from someone else. I've enjoyed short, sharp and hard racing but I'm a distance man at heart and it's time to ruin those PBs!

Got a place but will be away now on holiday. Haven’t told the Mrs yet but have found a small 50km trail race that’s on and local while we’re away (near San Francisco).....which is a week before London where I’ve just nabbed a club place in the ballot.

It's currently 3:29:07, which means I need to find a minute per mile! I'm confident I will be able to do it though, I've trained specifically for shorter distances this year but I've got a good base to build up on now, which is more than I can say for last years training which went pretty well until I picked up a couple of niggles, including shin splints which were unpleasant. I should be in a better condition to increase the mileage this year and I'll incorporate more speed sessions too. I went off very quickly and strongly last year, I was fine until about mile 16 so I'm going to do more double run days this year and I'm going to think more about fuelling. The marathon generally falls on the hottest day of the year to that point as well, so I'll need to go somewhere warm in the month or so beforehand to get some hot weather training in too!

I’ve got an entry - will see how the training goes but hope to take part.

Ran a glorious 10 miles at dawn along the frozen banks of the River Wharfe past Bolton Abbey yesterday - can’t beat that kind of run really.

I wish you well. Reason I ask is that I’m going to attempt a sub-3 this year as well so I’m bothering similar minded people for tips and ideas. I’ve got my time down from 3:20 to 3:05 over ten years and turning 50 next year I’ve decided 2018 is the final push for a sub-3. I have used a Runner’s World 3:15 plan to get to 3:05. I will try and follow their 3:00 plan but also do core strengthening and keep my fingers crossed.

Sub 3 hours is 6:50 minutes per mile isn't it..? I'll break cover and admit that that is a secondary target for me at Brighton - my predicted for marathon is about 2:58 so it is certainly in the back of my mind as a possibility... sub-3:15 is more important though!

6:53 to be precise. The thought of running two back to back sub 1:30 half marathons suggests sub 3 hours is beyond me. I would like to think I could beat my current pb of 3:15:59 but realistically I'd be delighted with anything under 3:10.

I'll be an interested spectator for the BM in April and can see @Curious Orange & @Ninja Elephant having a decent race based on their existing pb's

I'll be an interested spectator for the BM in April and can see @Curious Orange & @Ninja Elephant having a decent race based on their existing pb's

Quite honestly, I'm hoping my general level of fitness is going to set me up just fine when I step up the mileage and I'm definitely going to pile into more double run days because I have found myself struggling in the final third to really give it the beans. Last year I got taken by the 3:15 pacer on the 21 mile line and no amount of swearing at him made him cut the pace! I'm planning on a combination of many miles, weekly swimming, cycling for a touch of cross training and following some core circuits from sexy ladies I follow on Instagram.

I sang it majestically at the Atletico friendly (I was ahead of the curve) and people didn't know what was happening. You have to really emphasise the NICHT for full effect!

When you put it like that... it is a concern but it's the right goal I think, the first half of the marathon last year I piled into 1:31odd, which was close. I am targeting 1:25 in Worthing. That will give me an idea of where I am I think - but I'm very aware I'm being ambitious!
