Plans are made to be changed!

Instead of heading to see my hill I ran a flat 8k with a mate at lunchtime. He's normally much fitter than me and has done the London Marathon and did Hastings Half in sub 1.50. He hadn't run for a while though. We bumped in to each other this morning and he asked me what I was up to and when I said I had a run planned at lunchtime he said he'd come too.

I was expecting to struggle to keep up with him but it was actually the other way round. Even in the heat it felt like a plod. Six months ago he'd have run me in to the ground!

Cheers!

No the Phoenix PB is registered OK in my Garmin. When you go Premium on Strava you have to put your current PB in to your profile to set the pace zones. I have now edited it and pressed "save" three times but it keeps reverting to my Worthing time. It's either a bug or I'm being stupid. I'll play with it again when I get back from my lunchtime run over the hills today.

Edit - I've just thought that I kept Strava running at Phoenix while I stopped the Garmin on the line, I bet Strava thinks the Worthing time is my best. I'll just have to go out there and beat it :)

You have solved the problem. Your next 10k will make that time obsolete however it was or wasn't recorded.

Am planning to run the Hove Prom parkrun for the first time on Sat. Naturally I'd like to do a good time. Can anyone advise on how to fine-tune my blood doping in time for the race?
l

Bit late for advice but most of us go for the simple bottle of red.

Want to know how you got on and how much big nuts has taken off his record. Only have an hour left of wifi then 3 days on a ferry out of touch with NSC and the wider world. There are a couple of running machines though.

My debut on the Prom: 21:31; AG 74.52%. Nice course but my goodness it was windy. Looking at the relative size of the turnouts for this one and the run in Hove Park, the smart guys opted for the latter. Enjoy your trip!

Hit one of my goals this morning on a very early run that I had to fit around a blog post and getting my son to a football game and watching him. This meant I was out just after 6am. I'm pretty sure the other GB Greg Bobkin passed me by Hove Lagoon, the only other runner I saw for forty minutes, and he looked like he was on his was back to Shoreham too. The things we do to fit our runs in!

Anyway I broke 1.30 for 10 miles. Watch says 1.29.10. Managed negative split at the end too. Final mile run in 8.39 having slipped in to the low 9s in mile 7 and 8. WELL pleased with that. Strava has lost it but I am about to sync it from the watch.

EDIT strava has found it https://www.strava.com/activities/391190557

Great effort! I think I said somewhere way up this thread that I think you'll be closer to 1:20 then 1:30 for 10 miles by the time you get to the event you're building up to. If not by the race, then during it I'm sure.

You're getting faster and I've lost all the "pace" (a relative term) that I had as a shocking 10km yesterday morning illustrated. I'm going to try for a 10-13 miler (I'll see how I feel) tonight, but I'm not optimistic about enjoying it at all.

Blue top, just going around the corner to the lagoon? Yeah, that was me. I thought it was you, but wasn't 100%.

Mine was a 4:30 start because of kids footy too. Just about made 22 miles, but the last two were REALLY hard going. Finished just before the Toll Bridge and saw the REMF additions to the tributes.

Bit of a worry though, on the running front, that I struggled after 20 AND I was taking it easier than I had been. I thought I'd be all right for IOW, but at this rate, it might be a struggle...

Yeah that was me. 4.30 START? Amazing. I'm going to have to do a couple of those in Feb or March by the sounds of it to get ready for Brighton. I suspect I shall be made to sleep on the sofa with my alarm!

Good luck for IOW, I'm sure you can do it.

A first for me Saturday I had to drop out of Hove Park Run at the 2 mile point. I've never not finished a race before and I was actually on for a pb as roughly 3 seconds inside last weeks time, but I had a really bad headache Friday afternoon and I couldn't shift it so by the time I got to mile 2 my head felt like it was going to explode.

Enjoyed watching the front runners come in when I warmed down and then took a gentle 4 mile loop around Portslade to home. Considering a run tonight but I'm still far from 100%.

Good running Guiness Boy & Greg Bobkin. Greg Bobkin you're in good shape for IOW certainly in terms of distance, my best marathon runs I haven't run past 17.5 miles in the build up. Whenever I push to 20 or just above could be just a coincidence but I've run a lot worse maybe as the body takes longer to recover.

Thanks both. I think it was just a bit of a shock to the system how tired I was after 20, given my runs had been pretty strong for a while.

GB, I meant to say you looked pretty strong, so well done.

Ran the Hellingly 10k this morning @ 48.01. Despite a frantic last 40metres just couldn't get into the 47s. Perfect conditions today helped me run my fastest 10k for 13 years. My times are really improving since I started hill climb training and hope to be in good shape for the Sussex half Marathon in October.

A weekend of Yorkshire running for me as up here for family event.

Skipton parkrun on Saturday - finished 14th out of 114 in 21:40. It's a tougher course than the Brighton Parkruns- four laps of more or less 50% steep climb and 50% steep downhill. A pb but I've only done it a couple of times before. The lashing rain and wind added to the full on Yorkshire experience!

This morning though was glorious sunshine for a 20km run along the River Wharfe past Bolton Abbey. One of the nicest runs I've ever done - rugged terrain and lots of ups and downs so only 1:55 but feeling ok for Barns Green in a couple of weeks.
On the back to Sussex now- was really sorry to miss everything yesterday but big family commitment and now looking forward to Tuesday night.

Farnham Pilgrim marathon today. If any of you are inclined, it's a brilliant event (includes a half) and highly recommended. Great route, superb scenery and fabulous organisation - I think there were 12/13 water stations (biscuit/sweetie stations) on the marathon course and a massive array of cakes at the finish. Tough course, with a fair amount of hillage and some awkward terrain including sand, rutted tracks etc but some respite on fields and country roads. Pretty pleased with about 4.19 in the end. The fact that there is a brilliant pub 100 yards from the finish line has absolutely no bearing on my views [emoji3]

Online entries for the Mince Pie ten are now open. It's a part off road loop of Peacehaven & Saltdean voted as one of the best runs in the country by Runners World. I completed this for the first time last year and really enjoyed it.

The race is scheduled for Sunday 6th December at 11am

Sorry for quoting this old post but I've just noticed that the kids' football stops in December which means I will be free to do the Mince Pie. I assume trail shoes needed for this. Can anyone recommend any good cheap ones for a Brooks GTS road shoe wearer? I'm not going to do much cross country before the Brighton Marathon so they will need to be a purchase I can justify (not to me but to 'er indoors :lolol: )

I didn't wear trail shoes last time but wish I had have done as the down hill off road section was incredibly slippery and I had to stop to near walking pace as I was so unsteady. It's about 50/50 on & off road so if conditions are dry then road shoes would be good enough, if not and it's wet like last year then yes I too would be interested in a cheap pair of trails which would be similar to a Brooks Raveena.

I keep looking here for a cheap-ish pair of trail shoes: http://www.sportsshoes.com/products/running/shoe/trail/?l=20 but have yet to take the plunge.

They do generally seem to be cheaper than road shoes, I thought.

(Be aware once you click on that, they'll fill your NSC ad space with tempting delights, or at least they do for me)

If you use GTS, Brooks Cascadia are basically the same shoe but with a trail sole so you should be able to order a cheap pair online in the same size as your GTS. I don't use them myself but know several GTS users that do.

Inov8 do excellent trail shoes with great grip - something like roclites for the Downs when it's very wet. Other than that, usual rules apply really - go to a decent shop and try a few different types out. Trail shoes are generally cheaper than roadies as they don't have as much cushioning (not needed).

I mainly wear GTS, but for light trails like the south downs i use Brooks Cascadia's, or Brooks ASR's which can handle the road as well as trails or Brooks GTX's (Goretex lined or something which do over heat your feat a bit.. but yeah a good walking shoe).. never had anyproblems with any of them.
