Some cracking times over the weekend - nice work people. I couldn't make parkrun – I had to settle for Westow's for a birthday party – but got out yesterday and took a tour around Shoreham-by-Sea, taking in the airport and the beach, before heading up the hill from the River up to the youth hostel, and then back down to home. It was 15 miles, but that felt like nothing, compared with some friends that did The Wall, running across the width of the country - 69 miles in 19 hours!

Rest day today, and then back to some speed work tomorrow. Hope this rain clears up by then...

On NSC for over two decades...
The very lovely Mrs Orange bought me a TomTom Runner watch for my 40th, so I've been busy trying it out over the various routes I take.

Today, at lunch, I did my 8.5 mile route... and here are the stats!!

1 00:07:20 8.19
2 00:06:58 8.63
3 00:07:30 8.03
4 00:07:11 8.36
5 00:07:33 7.95
6 00:07:48 7.73
7 00:07:22 8.15
8 00:07:54 7.61
9 00:04:27 8.18

The above is split by mile, with section 9 being 0.61 of a mile. The final column is speed. So, I'm averaging 7:26 miles... but boy do I slow down whenever I encounter a hill!! Back to the Downs for me on Wednesday!

Agreed there great for so many reasons. I love the competitiveness of running against others but for many it's getting out there, keeping fit in a non pressurised social environment.

It was my first Park Run since early March so really pleased to come in with a pb of 19:41. Also saw Knocky1 & 7:18 at the start and after the race. We were discussing the Brighton Phoenix 10k next month and how 7 NSC runners are confirmed and entered so should be a good run and social event if you want to get involved.

Today's mile splits

Mile 1 - 6:08
Mile 2 - 6:32
Mile 3 - 6:20
0.12 of mile 0:41 seconds

Average pace of 6:18 per mile.

I have never checked my garmin stats for a Parkrun before. Found that my total distance varies from 5.02 km to over 5.2km. This mainly due to the curving course where you often have to run wide for a clear run.
The biggest boost is that when doing 20:24 (5.11 km) 10 days back I averaged 3:59 kms meaning if I had been able to run a straight course I would have got a sub 20 for a 5k. In fact I did but will not count that.
The conclusion to my waffle is that on a straight seafront course I am looking for sub 20 before the Rugby World Cup.

Oh you'll do sub 20 no doubt - but some of the difference in distance is down to Garmin accuracy not your wobbling all over the track :D:D

Nice early finish from work to get a good 7 miles in this evening in preparation for the Phoenix 10k 3 weeks tomorrow.

1 7:22.0 1.00 7:22
2 7:12.4 1.00 7:13
3 7:03.4 1.00 7:04
4 6:55.2 1.00 6:55
5 7:00.6 1.00 7:01
6 6:52.0 1.00 6:52
7 6:27.8 1.00 6:28

48:53 overall furthest I've run below 7 minute miles.

So I can't blame it on the wine?

Nope - I noticed this with my Garmin. Sometimes I'll be going along at 8'30ish pace, and it will tell me I'm running 9'30 or something. There is a specific flat spot up Mill Hill, and probably others. Sub 20 along the seafront is on, for you - no problem.

I'm all signed up for Phoenix now - working towards that in the short term, full-on marathon running can wait
big nuts, thanks for the reminder of a three-week countdown, the pressure is on.

Thought i'd missed the Phoenix 10k boat, as the registration website was down.... but it came back up, so now registered. Not many places left...

I think that makes you the 7th NSC runner signed up and confirmed. Anyone else? I'm presuming entries won't be available for too much longer.

10k ?? 10k ??!! No cakes, sausages or flapjacks. No mandatory kit list and no headtorch. Hardly worth bothering is it ? A race that actually starts and finishes on the same day ??

It's not a proper race I'm telling you. Best avoided. You'll learn [emoji3]

Extended my hill route out to 9k this morning. Out at 6.30am and needed the shades, absolutely beautiful morning and on my own for much of the way round. Splits were absolutely ridiculous at (per mile):

9.31 / 11.10 / 10.07 / 8.55 / 10.24 / 7.11 (for 2/3 of a mile).

Think I will stick with three runs a week as 5k intervals, 8 - 9 k hills and 10 mile long run until the Phoenix (with more of a rest the week before the race) and then get the long run slowly up to a half marathon.

Good running plan. Similar to mine.

5k Parkrun at close to full effort followed by 8 miles hill running on the Sundays. This then knackers me. So 5 mile Downs walk on Monday. Tuesday rest. Wednesday intervals. Thursday very easy 5 mile recovery. Friday rest. Repeat ad nauseam.

It's been much more fun than my marathon training to plod plan. It is also the first year I have done any running In the Summer after the Brighton Marathon. Yesterday was a new experience a 10k consisting of 25x200m sprints with 200m recovery on Hove Lawns.

Pushed my planned eight miles up to 10 this morning, just to get an idea of what might be possible at Brigh10, or whatever it's called. I was thinking 1hr 20, was pleasantly surprised. A few hills (and a bit of tired legs) affected the last few miles), but all in all a cracking workout.

1 7:28.1 7:28.1
2 7:38.9 15:07
3 7:35.0 22:42
4 7:45.6 30:28
5 7:35.6 38:03
6 7:34.8 45:38
7 7:43.9 53:22
8 8:01.8 1:01:24
9 7:58.4 1:09:22
10 7:40.7 1:17:03

I can usually run c.30 seconds per mile quicker in a race than on my own. If you can get down to 1.15 in practice you might threaten 1 hour 10 or at least get close to it.
