It's the Brighton derby in The Championship tonight!

West Brom. v. Blackburn - could be four of our young loanees involved (well, three plus Clarke). Will they all start? Some Blackburn fans see, to be leaving Van Hecke out of their preferred selections, which is a bit disappointing. Others though rather relish the thought of Andy Carroll coming up against him and trying to bully him!
West Brom of course have a new manager, so it will be interesting to see if he picks Clarke and/or Molumby. Could be a fun evening!

Yes may be worth watching tonight hopefully. Meanwhile when will Taylor Richards be fit I wonder? Been a bit unfortunate for Blues and Taylor himself. Sounded like Bowyer is hopeful that sometime in the next few weeks he may be up for selection??

Haven't seen much about him lately, but sure, hope he gets fit and playing soon. Perhaps we shouldn't send our young attackers to the midlands - first Sima crocked, and now Richards!

Think the WBA fans will be fairly pleased with that team - most of the players they've been wanting out are on the bench or not there at all. Mowbray keeping Khadra back as an impact sub?
Still, we've got the Van Hecke vs. Carroll shenanigans to look forwarward to!

Half time. Pretty dire and attritional so far. Defences (Clarke and Van Hecke) pretty much on top.

......... and on it goes. Both sets of fans not too impressed. This'll be 0-0, or settled by a lucky goal

Might have been some method in the madness of selling BDB….:moo:

But not brought back to be ahead of Roberts (who hasn't played yet) in the first team squad, on a free (or a loss-leader price of <£1M) in the summer then. Development plan of buying cheap and selling for a profit foiled again?

Hoping we bring Clarke back in the summer, he has a year on his contract I think, give Potter a chance to look at him in pre-season and make a decision then on whether to try and extend his contract and play him, or ask his agent to find a buyer.

Not all signings will work out, but we’re starting to see where we are going to be making handsome profits from player development……

Really? When the bottom has dropped out of the EFL market? Yes, our buy/develop tosell policy was formulated pre-Covid, when we could reasonably expect to sell players who didn't make it to our first team to Championship clubs for £2 or £3 or even £4M. Post Covid I suspect we've barely got that for Gyokeres, Longman and Walton between them. Many Championship (and SPL) clubs haven't got a million quid to spend on a player!

Yes we did well with White, made a profit (albeit a disappointingly small one) on BDB, and of course we've had some major flops (Jahanbakhsh, Locadia, Andone) - but we've got 20 odd young players out on loan. Clearly there's no chance of all of them becoming Albion first teamers, and they're certainly not all going to be te next Ben White in terms of transfer value. But the model will have been predicated on making a reasonable and sustainable profit on the majority of these players, and Covid has knocked a huge hole in the market.

We've paid more for some of these youngsters (Sima and Kozlowski for example) than we got for Gyokeres, Longman and Walton combined!

There were stories last week that Olympiacos won't be taking up their loan to buy option on Karbownik. This option caused quite a lot of angst in the summer.

Jan 22 window spend was £20M in the Football league, compared to £5M in Jan 21, and £35M in Jan 2020. It seems to be returning to spending, and the European Leagues are also increasing spending.

We should look at what we paid for Gyokeres, and what we paid him, and if it is less than the fee received for him, it was a positive piece of player trading, it isn't right to look his fee received compared to the fee for the next development players brought in.

The worry there is he has been injured a lot, might be another Lua Lua type situation where he never quite gets to his potential, because he never goes more than a few games without a problem.

Not played a lot (mostly due to injuries) and I would imagine the buy option was a pretty hefty sum since he is young and talented, so no big surprise that they are unlikely to use that option.

According to Transfermarket anyway we sold Gyokeres for a small amount more than we paid for him, but whether that 'profit' covered all the expenses of employing/training/developing/monitoring him for three and a half years is at best doubtful. If you are right that the Championship market is recovering, that is good news - I still think we're likely to take a hit with some of our loanees coming to the end of their contracts in the summer though.
I'm still liking the project - and want it to succeed. Hopefully the Covid blip is a temporasry setback.

Who had the angst - us or them? (Probably just my memory, but I don't remember a great deal of discussion at the time).

Cheerful bunny :lolol:
Not entirely convinced all your points are valid. A “disappointingly small” profit on Dan Burn?
Yes the market has changed……….for everyone.
Future profits? Who can say but a better chance of making a margin on sales than many clubs would be a less pessimistic view.
