Official Albion v Man City Thread

BBC

Brighton 2-2 Man City (5-3 pens)

Murray (right) scored late on to send the game into extra time
Manchester City suffered an embarrassing Carling Cup exit after being beaten on penalties by Brighton.

Brighton's Steve Thomson struck the post before a deflected Gelson Fernandes strike put City in front.

Glenn Murray fired in to send the game into extra-time and Joe Anyinsah turned and shot home to put Brighton ahead.

Stephen Ireland slammed in an equaliser but Michael Ball missed the only penalty of the shoot-out as City went crashing out to the League One side.

Brighton keeper Michael Kuipers had saved from Ball with the home side up 4-3 on spot-kicks.

Matthew Richards stepped up to take the penalty needed to secure Brighton's victory and he made no mistake as he sent his side through at the expense of their illustrious Premier League opponents.

The result will bring City back down to earth after their recent takeover by the billionaire Abu Dhabi United Group and the 6-0 romp against Portsmouth on Sunday.

Brighton will now play Derby in the third round and the vistory comes after they suffered the ignominy of being beaten by nine-man Walsall last weekend.

The Seagulls had gone close when Thomson's shot came back off the post but they had wasteful City finishing and Kuipers to thank for keeping them level until the 64th minute.

Richard Dunne headed over for the visitors, while Michael Johnson skewed a shot wide.

Brazilian striker Jo was denied by Dutch keeper Kuipers before Fernandes failed to head in from a Daniel Sturridge cross.

Fernandes atoned for his miss with the opener when Jo latched on to Ireland's pass on the edge of the area and turned it unselfishly aside for his team-mate.

Kuipers impressively saved from Ireland and Ched Evans and Murray made City pay for their misses when he slotted in after keeper Kasper Schmeichel parried Thomson's effort on 89 minutes.

Anyinsah lashed them ahead five minutes into extra-time but Ireland's reply 10 minutes later forced the shoot-out.

Each of the penalty takers had kept their nerve to score with aplomb before Kuipers saved from Ball and Richards scored the winner.

Well done to all the guys...excellent result and being someone who lives away from Brighton I have to admit I had a lump in my throat when Richards scored the winning pen...had to watch on sky sports news...we evidently have the players, committment and ability, lets take that to league 1 in big style now..well done to the players, club and fans, we needed that and lets use this as THE stepping stone...get on guys..

I always read the official thread after the games I miss due to obvious reasons,
Just finished reading this one.
What a read! it was like being there with all the action captured perfectly by the posters and not too much crap in between.
Surely this must be a sign for the rest of the season, although I shudder a bit at the thought of the league form in our most famous cup trip to Wembley.
It is hard to believe that this could have been done after the result on Saturday.
Reading the write up on the Sun online made me so proud to be a supporter, I shall be wearing my shirt for a week as a tribute:bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:

Never started one before so thought the one where we beat the richest team in the world would be a good start.

.

Just call me Nostradamus.

Permission to start the offical thread against Derby too please. It may be a lucky omen!!

I just did the same thing-as good as this thread was to read it was frigging GREAT to be there. The stats don't do our performance justice, we were as good as City in all aspects of the game and everybody held their nerve. What a night...what a night to be an Albion fan.

Me too, all 28 pages! In fact I must have been on here nearly 5 hours reading all that I missed last night because I just happened to have been at a game somewhere!

The match threads are great. I reckon NSC must have made some sort of record for the amount of threads/postings in the last 24 hours.

Just gone through this whole thread! FANTASTIC!!!!!

Just read it all and it got me wondering how did you feel not being there? If you could only listen to the radio it must have been a mixture of happiness at the result but sadness for not being there yourself?

I was gutted not being there but circumstances dictated otherwise, but if any young fans who were there got the same buzz as I did in 1977 when we done Ipswich in the league cup it's something they will never forget. To say it was tense listening to the radio would be the understatement of the year and by the time we got to penalty's I really did have sweat on my forehead. I know one thing for sure though, If my neighbours were asleep when Richards stepped up for his penalty they certainly would'nt have been when I heard the roar go up from the crowd when it hit the back of the net. Even Mrs bulldog got out of bed to see what all the commotion was about and it would take a nuclear explosion to wake her up.
