I'll put my hands up and say that on many an occassion over the last 5 years I've groaned when I saw his name on the team sheet

on a ludicrously self important level it's testimony to his achievements of late that I greet this a good news

:drink: to

Anthony Philip David Terry Frank Donald Stanley Gerry Gordon Stephen James Oatway

He has played well this year, but what happens if he returns to type, then we are stuck with somebody who without form is out of his depth.

However more cynically, we are reasonably blessed in central midfield and both Nicolas and Hammond can do his job. Now we are rather short of attacking and creative options, so could his wage packet (probably one of the better ones at the club) not have been better used elsewhere. Now I know this is not a decent way to treat somebody who has been a great servant to the club, but we are operating in difficult times.

Great news, Charlie has worked hard to get to this stage, and he certainly hasn't looked out of his depth for some time.

How did he read the contract?

That's in a bit of bad taste Uncle, request you make an apology.

or why not get rid of hammond and nicholas and use their wages elsewhere!!

It really gets on my nerves when people keep getting at Oatway. Even we he shows his best form in an albion shirt, someone has to say we should use his wages to sign someone else

WHAT A LOAD OF BOLLOX. he has been one of out best players this year AND FULLY deserves his new contract

I think Mike read and Jim Davidson represented him, it was a dream come true

 :lolol:

He's not quite my favourite players (as some seem to think :D ) but he's been brilliant this year, the change of playing style brought out new talents in him, and (far less importantly) he's still giving me a lot of laughs both in his programme column and indirectly as his NSC critics struggle to comprehend how well he's playing :clap2: :lolol:

Charlie puts in the effort and has now been coached by McGhee (which answers Soton) to be the best he can be (or maybe even better)
It is now paying off. Not just in his own game but to inspire the team around him as captain.
I get the impression that Guy has as much respect for him as the youngsters do.

As for the reading, he has been to the Study Support centre and overcome his difficulty. Not only that but he has been open and honest about it to encourage others in the same boat.

What does he have to do to earn the respect of the fans?

Here's to you Charlie

Because Oatway is out of contract and Nicolas and Hammond both have a further year to run on their deals. So to get rid of them would mean paying up their deals, where as to have got rid of Oatway would cost us nothing.

However it is not going to happen, he is here for another year, lets just hope he can carry on playing at his current level, otherwise we are stuck with deadwood drawing a wage.
