Not totally unexpected but still a great shame, an integral part of the first winning team for years.

We could do with a Cullip/Oatway type axis in the side now.

Well said (If you can call it that!)

One of the few remaining players from the Micky Adams era, ok so he had some injury problems in the last few years but he was a gritty and determined player who helped us gain promotion to Division 1 of the first time in over a decade.

Good luck to him with his coaching job:albion2:

From the Argus:

"It has been a nightmare over the past year and a half. Having come back from one major injury I was hopeful of making a full return to action but to suffer another just as serious left me facing a difficult decision.

"It is with an extremely heavy heart that I have made the decision to quit the professional game as I always felt I had a few more years left to offer but I have very little choice for the sake of my future health.

"The last 18 months or so have been very tough for me but I have been helped through it by my family, friend and the club's medical staff."

Gotta feel for the bloke, especially if he only has one friend as the Argus seems to suggest.

Good luck Charlie and thanks for the 110% effort.

Well thanks for everything Charlie, not really surprising news but a shame all the same.
I think the best thing about Oatway was the way he upped his game while with us. I remember him being written off during the season we won the second division, but by the play-off season he was integral to our succes and went on to be a vital part of our championship squad, so cheers and I hope he takes up a well deserved position at the club

Thanks for giving us some amazing memories, back to back championships don't happen that often, you were an important part of that success, good luck in your new role with the club. Exciting times lie ahead for the Albion, hopefully you can be as an important part of the team that drives the club forward as you were to the footballing side during your playing days.

Thanks for being a great servant to the team Charlie. All the best in your new role.

Ignore Kinks and Del Boy. One's a Spurs fan (what's he know about football) and the other is attention seeking.

Great shame, a truly 100% player IMHO and I will miss him. Maybe he could do a coaching job with the youth set up for a start.

Charlie Oatway was today told he could make a quick comeback from his latest injury setback.

The Albion midfielder is back at home after surgery on a torn cartilage in his left knee.

Oatway's injury, picked up in pre-season, is unrelated to the broken ankle from which he was on the comeback trail but will rule him out of training for at least three weeks.

Physio Malcolm Stuart said: "Charlie's knee became rather sore after one of the earlier friendlies, then settled down a little bit.

"He played at Billericay last Saturday and was in discomfort afterwards. He had a scan on Monday and discovered a torn cartilage.

"It's desperately bad timing. Normally you would be looking at four to six weeks until he could resume full training. It could be sooner but as yet I don't know how much cartilage was removed."

Malcolm then donned his butchers apron and hockey mask, picked up a chainsaw, and went back into the treatment room to continue some remedial work on Joel Lynch, who has picked up a slight ligament strain in training.

against the 1972? QPR side I hope!

It was the 1976 side, 15 minutes away from being Champions before the Dingles capitulated! :censored: A sad irony that it was a QPR player that started the end of Oatway's career on the pitch.

Those "thank f***" and "about f***ing time" wankers should thank f*** that their livelihood and doing something they love isn't taken from them in such a cruel fashion. As far as I am concerned Charlie always tried his bollocks off for us and the least he deserves now is sympathy from arseholes who are not fit to tie his boots.

Good luck in your new role Charlie and I hope you make a go of it.

I am stunned at this news. In fact....you could have knocked me down with a feather when I first read it...

Who would have believed it...?

I think that comment is well out of order.

Oatway has been a great servant for the Albion and while I personally don't think that he would have made the first team anyway now is not the time to rub his nose in it.

Just think how he's feeling now and how he will feel if he sees your post.

Just look at where it came from.....
