How soon is now?
I know there must be hundreds of these threads, but i'm going to start another anyway.

I need a new mobile phone, ideally a smart phone. It needs to have built in wi-fi, everything else I need is pretty much standard these days anyway.

It'll be on a contract, but I don't want an iphone.
Any suggestions, i've heard a lot about HTC, but has anybody got/used one?Are they any good? Also Nokia E71 looks like it might tick the boxes, again anybody got/used one?

Cheers

Honestly........HONESTLY I personally promise if you get an iPhone, within a week you will realise it is an absolute cut above all other phones.

I will second this promise, the iPhone really is one of the greatest inventions ever, including but not limited to the wheel, sliced bread and the internal combustion engine.

Agreed. I have had smartphones from Nokia, HTC, Sony Ericsson and Samsung. I thought they were all good in their own right. Got the iPhone 3GS when it came out and it blows all others away and I was unsure about it until I got one, I honestly can't see me owning anything other than iPhones now.

That said apart from the iPhone, I would recommend the nokia N97 which is a great piece of kit or if you want a cheaper option I previously had the Nokia 5800 which does everything you would want of a smartphone for a very reasonable price, No keyboard though if thats an issue.

To answer the iphone questions:
1: i'll have to stump up some cash or get a more expensive contract - neither of which I really want to do

2: An iphone let me down with its shocking battery life right when I was up shit creek and needed a phone the most. At least with most other phones I can carry a spare battery if I have to

oh and the Mrs has a 5800 which is good, but has developed firmware problems starting up - and thats put me off(as well as the Howard and Hilda factor)

In which case you can't go far wrong with the E71, does all the basic smart phone stuff very well, Not the best phone in the world but its what I would call a solid all rounder and is pretty cheap at the moment too. Ther eis an E72 on its way out but that will push the price up a bit.

Nokia N97 on 3 if you want it for Texts.

3 Store - Price Plans
Just click on to Texter plans.

I spoke to 3 about the texter plan as one of them includes the E71 and internet access, but the girl was so f***ing rude I hung up on her. And that alone put me off them.
If I can I want to stay with O2 as they've been faultless in my 5 years with them.......so far

Do you not think that due to being a VALUED o2 customer of 5 years odd you would have some leverage in getting an iPhone at a lower cost/tariff?

Also, regarding battery life, surely just put it on to charge every night when you go to bed? Never had any battery problems with mine.

i've no doubt being with then for 5 years will curry a little favour, but to be honest I don't want an iphone. The battery thing really bothers me, regardless of sticking it on charge every night.
I was left high and dry at an airport at 3am when a hire car company didn't meet me due to delays, and in order to get their contact details I needed to get on the web to access my e-mail. Which I did via a mates iphone, before I could get the details the battery died and that was it - f***ed..... I know this could happen with any phone, but its soured my feelings towards the iphone. And now I travel a lot with my 6 month old son, and don't ever want to be in that position again if I can help it

So it was a mate's phone? Sounds like he hadn't bothered charging it, you can hardly blame iPhones as a whole for him being careless can you?

No worries though, not gonna force it on you.

You can get a special case which includes a backup battery.

Not tried it myself.
