So we have £900 billion to clear in, say, one year to be optimistic. Easy peasy, I'll kick off then:

#1. 3p tax on all mobile text messages.

The UK sends 11 million texts per hour. That's 264 million per day or 96360 million per year. Taxed at 3p each that's 289080000000 pence or £2890,800,000 per year.

Total raised £2.89 billion. Therefore, remaining deficit = £897.11 billion.

Over to you

Government should take a leaf out of Portsmouth's book , go into administration wiping out £800bn of debt immediately.

Legalise all drugs

Tax on cannabis should raise several billion and the amount of police time saved and lower prison costs will be considerably more

And a special 75% tax rate for Premiership footballers

are you shitting me? It costs a fraction of a penny to send a text, yet we're charged over 10 times the amount.

Make it a tax but also make companies unable to raise the 10p a text price!

Can we tax people who choose to pronounce words of foreign origin with a stupid foreign accent ? .... when speaking English.

( Torteeeeyaahhhhhhh ) .. that's a Tortilla to me and you.

I heard someone pronoucing a French Christian Name yesterday, using an accent Inspector Clouseau would be proud of.

Imagine if I went into an Indian Restaurant and did the same....

Would also stop gang warfare atrocities in Mexico and potentially save Afghanistan (and British soldiers lives) too.

I've always been on that side of the argument, but I've realised it's a bit more complicated than after reading some articles about cigarette smuggling.

If the government legalised drugs, they may possible tax them at a higher rate to discourage people from using them - just like fags.

As the price increases, you've created a black market for an illegal supply.

.. and you are back to square one.

Cigarette smuggling happens on a massive scale beyond someone filling up a transit in Calais. I'm not sure what the situation is now, but organised crime moved in as soon they saw the potential profits. They've had to increase the sentencing accordingly.

If you are going to legalise drugs you've got to make them affordable as silly as that seems.

That's the argument anyway - quite an interesting point of view.

And only pay the creditors we feel like paying, then as soon as we've escaped from administration, we can go and spend billions on something David Cameron fancies, "because he really wanted it".

Why would you pronounce an Indian name with a comedy French accent? :jester:
