only true IF you replace them

Hmmm... one of the prime causes of the recent financial crisis was the fact that banks acted recklessly because there was too little regulation. I fail to see how putting the banks under NO regulation is a positive move. The banks would then able to act as they like knowing that governments would always bail them out.

And only pay the creditors we feel like paying, then as soon as we've escaped from administration, we can go and spend billions on something David Cameron fancies, "because he really wanted it".

Ask Tony Bloom to pay for the Olympic stadium then. And Brighton can then do a South Coast version of MK Dons.

Seemples...

No, changed my mind. What we shoudl do is create cost free zones in the country. In these zone there would be no electricity and no gas. Everyone has to live off the land and they can only barter with outer zones. Imasgine thye amoutn of money this would save

Idenitified Cost-free zones:

Croydon
Porstmouth
Leeds
Milton Keynes

Probably enough to give you typing lessons...anyway it would be interesting to "Compare and contrast" the percentage of people living in Croydon (or Pompey or Southampton) living off State benefits, say, to that figure in...oh let's think...Brighton?

I think you will find that the vast majority of these properties are leased. And as the government are finding out, closing quangos not only leads to thousands of people out of work but massive shortfalls in redundancy payments and pension funds.

And despite the perception of hundreds of thousands of Sir Humphreys, I still fail to see how replacing not for profit organisations with private sector firms making huge profits is going to save money.

In a similar vein; I used to work for the DSS. The building i worked in was on a long term lease (25-30 years). The DSS went through restructuring and merged with with Job Centres to become a one stop shop for benefit needs. Fair enough; all of the DSS staff moved into the job centre. Hey presto empty building dont need to pay the lease, money saved, yes?

No. Just prior to the restructuring a new lease had been signed, which will have to be paid until a new tenant for the very large - 7 floors - office block is found (this happened in 2004 and the building is still empty). Not only that; under the terms of the lease the building has to be kept in the exact same order as when it was inhabited by the DSS i.e heated in winter cooled in the summer with hot and cold running water, electricty etc.

This is just one example in Kent. I would guess there are 100s throughout the country.
