Hello Jack, will our UK Elm population ever recover? Is anyone doing any research into developing Dutch Elm Disease resistant strains? It would be tragic if we lose such a lovely tree forever.
They certainly do. Do you know what species? (The trees, not the occupants of forthcoming estate.)
Are the trees to supplement the hedge rather to become another hedge? How tall ultimately do you wish to trees to grow? Do you have a photo of the planting area? This info is vital to make the right choice. No, not yet. What would you suggest? We will still have our well maintained hedgerow as a barrier.
The Dutch Elm Disease war isn't won, but it's under control in some parts of the country, especially Brighton, whose Council Team do a great job of doing so. There are several DED resistant species available now. Last winter, I helped to plant hundreds of DED resistant Elm saplings around Lancing College Equestrian Center in order to provide habitat for the White-letter Hairstreak butterfly.Hello Jack, will our UK Elm population ever recover? The bottom of our garden is more like a swamp than a rain forest at the moment!

Great effort. The secret of getting them to romp is looking after them in the first two years by watering and keeping the area around the bases weed-free.2000 trees planted in Newhaven and Peacehaven this week/weekend, thanks to Greenhavens.

I've been impressed by Greenhavens work around here. They've revitalised the Valley ponds, and the fowls therein. Their work on the Riverside Park is good too.
Perfect place to post this Acer from my garden a couple of days ago (afraid my photography is not of the level normally displayed on NSC)

*edit* Just seen, extra points for plants in the foreground

Saturday 23rd November is the start of National Tree Week.
Regardless of promises made by political parties to plant millions of trees, it's a case of the more the merrier.
Trees create an ecosystem to provide habitat and food for birds and other animals. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses, such as sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, from the air and release oxygen. One large tree can supply a day's supply of oxygen for four people.
How about an NSC Plant a Tree project?
Even if you only have a small garden, there is a tree or large shrub that would be suitable. If you aren't lucky enough to have your own garden, is there a friend or relative you visit frequently who wouldn't mind a new addition in the way of a tree? Or you could approach your local Council and see if you could donate a tree and see it planted near where you live, in a verge or park.
Trees make wonderful gifts, either receiving one or giving one, and what with Christmas looming.
You don't have to plant a tree next week. You can plant it when you want. I thought that anyone on here who fancies this could take a photo of it after it is planted, then throughout the year, post more photos of progress.
There is lots on the internet to help you choose the right sort of tree, or failing that, ask on this thread.
