Just going by this rant on the thread:
2 things to take from that, either side of the debate:-

- It's not for the bloke behind to decide who stands and who sits.

- Assuming matey behind was standing too, why didn't he go?

I'd like to know if any fan has been selected at random because s/he was standing and immediately thrown out without warning. I very much doubt it.

I'm sure not but it's a football match and things get a bit heated, that's to be expected in the same was as I'm sure the stewards don't ask politely "would you mind sitting down sir?"

I'm not defending and particular individual and maybe even all deserved to be thrown out but I think the attitude towards standing is just OTT, given my experience elsewhere

Agree entirely, just providing one of the number of corroborating statements from fans who said the guy didn't do a lot wrong, other than not sitting obviously, merely asked if the fans behind minded if he stood, and as a result has been accused of inciting the North Stand.

On the other thread on Saturday there were a number of others.

It was because he stood up (no pun intended) to the head steward, he said raising his voice (not shouting) something like "we've stood here for two years, why are you telling us to sit down now?" That was during the first half, then at half time he came back with loads of other stewards and has a quiet chat with him then escorted him out

So he was asked to sit down. He didn't. He argued. He got thrown out.

And some people are suprised by this? Really?!

Well it doesn't suprise me because I think stewards in general aren't the sharpest tools in the box. After having years of it at Withdean, you can easily see how these 'bouncers' just decide to enforce something out of the blue that they haven't done since the stadium opened. So BHAFC have to be different, they make home fans sit in the singing end of the stadium, unlike all other 45 or so clubs with all seaters?
I think what has happened here is since the Amex has opened the stewards have got more and more self governing and have a culture of just doing what they like. Throwing their weight around because maybe they are bored? Maybe they aren't even Brighton fans and try to quieten the singing end by forcing them to sit down(something that happened at Withdean), or just fancy taking somone on! I mean the police had no complaints, the stewards caused this issue, you could be next if ur in the north, unless you sit, or unless Hebbard sorts it out.

I have massive sympathy for any fan banned for the rest of the season just for standing. Whatever you think about the standing issue, such a punishment in no way fits the 'crime' and I would hope every other Albion fan agrees with that.

I'm getting more and more concerned about the way our football club is being run and the way in which our most vocal fans are seemingly being purged from Falmer. It appears the club are aiming to make the North stand the same as the rest of the ground; with everyone seated, creating little or no atmosphere.

There was no warning. He was imediatley thrown out for "raising his voice", the steward informed me that was the reason. No prior warning, no account taken for his history of supporting the club or behaviour at football. Again, persistent standing is against the rules in the ground but the manner in which this happned was truly shocking.

See my earlier post. The stewards are getting a culture of self governing. They aren't Brighton fans, many are meat heads, just looking to take someone on. Yet no one at the club seems to care.

I will not comment on individual cases but I do find it ironic that the whole arguement for all seater stadiums is based on safety and crowd control but the biggest flash point and cause of incidents inside football grounds is now caused by the sitting/standing confrontations.

If that is the case, which I very much doubt, then people are fools to take issue with them. If you have a problem with the club policy then take it up with the club. Alternatively, go to a game, have a few drinks, take issue with the stewards who are doing their job, and end up missing the biggest game of the season!!!!! Seems to me to be a no-brainer.

Are you a steward?
You post such bias 'stewards are gods' everyone else is wrong nonsense, I do wonder. Don't be so ****ing stupid. No really just stop being a ****ing tool. You tool.
Yes insults, you deserve it
They haven't enforced the sit down rule there SINCE THE STADIUM OPENED. Then they pick on ONE PERSON. ****ing tools if you ask me. Oh funny that, just like you. Don't you get it. Make the north sit and the atmos dies. If you get your way, a completely sterile nothing atmos, I'll stop going. So will thousands of others, you can sit there on your bloody own tell the guy next to you that you remember the good old days when the Amex used to be full.

Tool.

Yes they have.

this is true, but mainly only in the centre block behind the goal as over half of those stand, where we are they seem to say something once every 7/8 games and even then they stop after getting rows a to p to sit. This is always in the first 20 minutes of a game, I can't think of a single time they've said anything during the second half where the majority stand, and then there's games like arsenal and Newcastle when everyone stood for 90 mins and nothing was said

It's clear that if you don't comply instantly with a steward's request to sit down in North Stand, you are out and banned, particularly if you give any backchat.

Seems very draconian, and I feel immensely sorry for anyone banned as the extreme sanction really does not seem to fit the offense.
