The Avenue then Maloncho
Us oldies remember the time when away fans were in the corner in-between the North Stand and East Terrace. I remember plenty of singing and energy from that section closest to the away fans. Looking back, it seems odd that both sets of energetic supporters were essentially right next to each other with the little bit of segregation between them. Now THAT was a atmosphere.
As I’ve mentioned recently on a different thread I remember at time (81/82 possibly) when a section of singers positioned themselves at the north end of the East near the away fans, a bit short lived as by then we were struggling getting one group of singers together let alone two

Whoever ends up in the ‘presumed’ North Stand Upper, it will at the very least make the North aesthetically more pleasing, it’s such a small stand and additional features, fans, colour will look good.
Won’t be anything upper about it. Look at the south. It’ll be just the same.

Shows the importance of getting these things right at the design stage.
Very early on, the intention was for away fans to be housed in the north stand.

The movement of the away fans to the southwest corner has been known for a little while now - the club don't want them directly behind the goal any more.

It will be interesting to see how that changes the Albion fan dynamic - will the south stand "rival" the north?
It needs too if there is any hope of it impacting on the atmosphere.

Because you then just have the same wank atmosphere but with some **** banging a drum. e.g. Arsenal. It’s just annoying.
And a twat jumping up and down at the front with a megaphone. I noticed this during the Palace match yesterday on TV. To me, this amazing Selhurst atmosphere is a myth. Yes it's better than ours but that isn't hard.

Everyone always slates the idea of a drum but the atmosphere is wank without one so whats the harm in actually giving it a go?
When I go to the pub I want atmosphere but don’t want a drum. Why is a drum associated with atmosphere? Why not have flashing lights, or the release of distinctive smells, or the sound of crashing waves. The reason we don’t have any of those is because they’re as bloody irritating as a sodding drum.

The bloke behind us is the main cause of that. He just doesn't listen to the police box side and likes the sound of his own voice. It's got so bad, that we are tempted to move.
There is something intrinsically weird about starting a chant at the football. Anyone who feels the urge is likely to have been (or still be) the class joker, whose quips hit the mark only one time out of ten, or some pissed-up arse, or both. These people imagine they have the charisma and leadership of Lawrence of Arabia (as played by Peter O'Toole).

Exactly. I'm in the camp of let's try anything to get an atmosphere going but I have never heard a drum help an atmosphere. They are ALWAYS annoying, normally led by some goblin who just loves the sound of their weird little drum tunes (hello Arsenal) and make me want to garrote the instigator. See also goal music - the most irritating, ludicrous and pointless creation ever at a football match.

I was under the impression the new tier would seat around 750 fans, there’s no chance there’s that many in the South tier.
The approved plans were for an additional 1750 seats. Around 1000 have already been added so I think you're about right with 750 above the north.

Judging by the plans it's a bit more substantial than the South stand one.

It's been done to death on here but even if it made financial sense the location of the 'dog head' roof supports makes an additional tier close to impossible. I imagine they could do away with the hospitality suites and add another 5 rows above the approved structure but it's not going to create the imposing north stand everyone craves.

I definitely think there's scope to market this hospitality shelf to more vociferous fans who want to benefit from an improved view, a pub style bar and better facilities.

I'm sure there's 750 fans who would pay north of £1500 a season and plenty that would pay £100 plus a match for access to a relaxed hospitality experience where they can wear what they want and sing along with the north.
