Can anyone here understand the philosophy of not wanting to eat ANY "foreign" food?

Heard recently about an acquaintance using the above phrase and being served dry plain chicken and chips at a CHINESE restaurant.

Ridiculous.

Not even slightly. I love trying new cuisines, not that I get regular opportunities.

it is all about personal choice but to embarras oneself and those in whose company you are in is plain ridiculous.

I can't understand the logic though. The food they did eat was still prepared by "FOREIGN" people, so it's the ingredients that aren't wanted?

Also presumably, they then drove home in a foreign car to watch something on a foreign tv?

It isn't even 'foreign' anyway, most self-respecting Chinese gourmands would proabably turn their noses up at the anglicised creations that get served up here for our palates.

TG - True...

Also...this might all kick off but I would suggest it is partly a generation thing....some people grew up never eating anything other than good old English cooking.

As Karl Pilkington put it "an old man eating a pizza just doesn't look right." And he's spot on.

I can understand the logic of it. It's reassuring and it plays on a fear of the unknown, and a certain strain of xenophobia. I would hate to be like that cos you'd be missing out on so much, but hey to each his own.

Indeed, and when they get home they drink 'English-made' tea from Sri Lanka and 'English-made' coffee from Costa Rica, while eating 'English' bananas from the Dominican Republic, ''English' oranges from Israel, and 'English-made' chocolate from Ghana...

etc...

Ridiculous.

I went to China, and never ate any CHINESE food.

Horses for courses, you like "foreign" food fine, you eat it, why do you feel the need to impose you wish to others and bitch about other that don't want to ?

I don't have any inclination to drink horlicks or cocoa. But see no reason to bitch to those that do.

Ridiculous.

I just can't get my head around the psychology behind it mate.

Genuinely, what's the reason not to want to try any new food?

Are the same set of ingredients somehow "better" or "safer" if cooked in an "English" way?

I'm not bitching I just don't understand it.

And I'm sorry, but I stick by the view that CHOOSING to go into a CHINESE restaurant just to order plain chicken and chips (still made by chinese people) is frankly embarrassing, unless you're 8.

Also, see Trufflehound's comment. We're all eating and drinking foreign food constantly.

If it is all about personal choice, why should personal choice be embarrassing ?

Peronal choice is Ok. my point is making ignorant commenst about otheres exercsing their choice whilst in their comopany.

E.g Fred, Tom and Bert go for a beer and then decide to have a curry. Bert does not like curry (personal choice) but joins the other two. When in the Taj Bert says in a loud voice 'I HATE THIS FORRIN MUCK' do me some chicken and chipe. This is where it is embarassing for his mates.

Does that help?

Pleased to discuss further.
