Can someone enlighten me - WHY are they biased towards Ferrari?

I'm not arguing (don't know enough about it) buy why do they want Ferrari to win the title as opposed to any of the other teams?

Because Ferrari did the equivalent of the G8 a few years ago and threatened to leave F1, and the FIA shat themselves. As a result Ferrari get greater prize money than the rest, and basically the FIA do everything in their powers to assist them.

It seems a daft change but it could make the races more intresting if a driver needs to win to catch up on wins

But unbelievably dull when the Championship leader is 10 seconds clear after 5laps, while his teammate is in second place slowing the field up. With only victories mattering, there would literally be nothing for the rest to race for.

It will also mean the stewards are even more powerful when they can throw random penalties out at the end of the race to change the winner. That won't just cost rivers a few points, costing them a win next season will be MASSIVE.

I confiently predict this rule to be changed by this time next year.

In a nutshell

Ron Dennis (the CEO of Mclaren) and Max Moseley (Goose Stepping, Nazi head of the FIA, the governing body of F1) hated each other with a passion. Moseley took advantage of this during spy gate to impose a huge fine on Mclaren which was harsh seeing as all teams do what they did to a greater or lesser extent all the time.

Dennis saw his chance for revenge when the NOTW revelations came out but Moseley rode it out. After the storm passed Mclaren were on the end of some very dodgy steward decisions (Hamilton in Belgium & France) and Ferrari got some very favourable ones (Hungary & somewhere else where Massa left the pitlane dangerously & Raikonnen's exhaust was hanging off).

Pretty obvious to most that this was payback from Moseley to Mclaren. Gritt is also right. No Ferrari no F1 as they carry the greatest history, weight and financial muscle of all teams.

And also to agree with the general gist of the thread. This is a shit idea. If they want overtaking why did they spend all of last year penalising drivers who made attempts to do so?

Crazy decision. Almost as crazy as mine to go to Walsall tonight.

Ah-ha, here it is.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/formula_1/article5372488.ece

For those who can't be bothered reading it all, the bit that shows the "special relationship" the FIA have with Ferrari, and the extent to which they beg, plead and well, bribe Ferrari not to leave F1 is pretty well demonstrated by this bit;

“Ferrari get so much more money than everyone else,” he said. “They know exactly what they get, they are not that stupid, although they are not that bright, either. They get about $80 million (about £54 million) more. When they win the constructors’ championship, which they did this year, they got $80 million more than if McLaren had won it.”

Ecclestone added that the special deal with the Italian sports car manufacturer goes back to the attempt by the teams to form a breakaway championship in 2003, when Ferrari were the first to return to the fold. “They were the only team that broke ranks with the other manufacturers – why did they break ranks?” he said. “That’s where the $80 million comes in. We ‘bought’ Ferrari. We ‘bought’ Ferrari’s loyalty. Our deal with Ferrari was that we ‘bought’ them so they would not go to the others.”

Yep, that's just how much the FIA value Ferrari, how much they believe they need them, and therefore why they will never do something silly like upset them via a stewards decision. No, far better to penalise drivers that the Ferrari run into, rather than Ferrari themselves.

I don't like the idea although it'll be interesting to see how the season pans out. I can see the argument in 10 points for a win, 8 for second, means it wasn't worth really pushing for the lead but I'd prefer the teams idea of increasing the winners points to 12.

Point's still do count. They'll decide where people are in the standings. It's just the most wins will claim the title. Teams have always wanted to finish as high as possible anyway so I don't think it'll change things in that respect.

Not happy with it as if someone wins just 4 races all season and bails out of the others then he will win the title if no-one else matches him? sorry but thats f***ing shite!

at least its marginally better than the GOLD-SILVER-BRONZE idea that eccleshite had in the first place!

Why? It is such a stupid situation to which no one will enjoy. Seeing as in the qualifications the leader will get the advantage especially as it is only depended on whether you can now come in 1st or not. Much much more prefer the point system.

Absurd idea, I can see a lot of drivers shutting it down 20 laps from the end of races if they've got no chance of winning to conserve their engines, which have to last 4 races now.

me personally if you did want to change it would have changed to 15 points for a win and 10 for second as the point system was to close together

Is there anyone, anywhere - outside of Bernie's coterie - who thinks this is a good decision?

It looks even worse than his decision to invest in QPR...

you got to laugh really. impose a budget cap to "open up" the sport then change rules so that only the top two/three teams can ever win the chamionship. more than ever, the sport revolves around the first lap, after that its a procession.

Na the teams won't let them do that cos they'll want the constructers Championship.

F1 has finally disappeared up its own arsehole. Its been a slow and tedious journey for a fair few years now.

If you want proper racing, give the 2-wheel variety a go. The Worldsuperbike and Worldsupersport races so far this season have been outstanding.

I heard the little twerp being interviewed and he said it would encourage overtaking and racing. I was wishing that the interviewer would ask him if he would tell his stewards to stop penalising people for doing just that (eg Hamilton last season being demoted several places - it wasn't a Ferrari he dared to overtake, was it?) - but the interviewer bottled it.
A greater points differential between first and second might be worth consideration, though. Too logical for Ecclestone.

No points in Formula 1 this season? - nah, more like no point.
