Danny Welbeck has two Ghanaian parents, and chose England over Ghana

Tariq Lamptey has two Ghanaian parents, and (eventually) chose Ghana

Evan Ferguson has one Irish parent, and one English parent, but obviously chose Ireland

So for anyone at all bothered by yesterday’s line up, you can probably cling to something there.


FWIW personally I think we were missing a bit of identity. Remember that the English players missing - Dunk, March, Hinsh - are not just ‘English’ - they are all local, Albion academy graduates, with family connections to the club.

In case there is any doubt, I neither care nor mind that we had an all-overseas eleven for a period of time.

I often marvel at the ridiculous quality of the players we now get to enjoy by running down the eleven on the pitch and noting their international representations, eg

Current Dutch international
Former Dutch international
Current Dutch international
Brqzilian
Current Colombian international
Current Turkish international

Etc etc

And doing that yesterday I noted Welbeck was the only English/British player in the starting eleven, and he was almost certain to be subbed for an overseas player.

Which simply had me wondering if that had happened before. Given Lewis Dunk’s near ever presence as our squad has become more and more international, I suspect not, but thought one of our resident statos may know definitively.

Someone today said…..we have spent over £200 million on players who are no better than what we had last season….. it’s early days but in a way I can see the argument.

Same points at this stage as last season. But last season at this stage I thought we were above where we should be in the table (ie: outperforming our ability), this season I think we're a bit below what with yesterday and Ipswich. Which makes me feel that we have a better squad.
