Nigel Farage has declared himself the real “leader of the opposition” and predicted his Reform UK party will gain more than 6m votes, after polling ahead of the Conservatives for the first time.

At an impromptu press conference in Westminster, the Reform leader said there was a momentum behind his party, and he “absolutely” believes that he will gain more votes than the Tories.

If Reform actually beats the Tories for seats it will be a miracle, even then I would expect the Lib Dems to form the opposition, possibly in coalition with the SNP but... we are talking fairyland stuff now.

I'm inclined to think they won't beat the Tories for votes either. The only time he ever got elected for anything was due to proportional representation as an MEP under the title UK Independence, he's a one person party whose name can only be on a ballot sheet in one constituency... a lot of his supporters might well be confused when they try to vote for " Our Nigel " and find that his name isn't down on the list.

I fully expect a big " scandal " or some sharp practice about 2-3 days before the election. A last desperate attempt by the Tories/Reform/Tufton St/ Daily Mail and Russian Bots to muddy the waters and cast doubt on the electoral process of democracy.

I think the Tories are out by a huge margin. But I would still prefer the manifesto to look about right, but none of them appear to. I still have sometime to think about it. I just want to hear more on the detail to totally convince me that they are not just Tories with red rosettes.

I'm a Green Party member, but what's your beef with Labour's manifesto? There's a fair bit in it, but it's hardly radical. But their idea is that they only want to include things that they're convinced they can achieve in it, which seems fair enough as far as I'm concerned. It's the only one really worth looking at, because they're going to be the next government.
And sorry to say this, your vote is only one out of c50m that have the possibility to vote so in all likelihood it won't be decisive. Just go with what you think's right.

Me too. I’m suspicious of a deal being done “last minute” for Reform to stand their candidates down, effectively doubling the Conservative vote.

They can't withdraw the names from ballot papers at this stage. They can, of course ask electors to vote for another candidate but I cannot see how that would work in reality seat by seat.

Indeed - the deadline was last week some time. Given that many people don't quite know what they are voting for much of the time - having the name on the ballot paper will still garner votes even if they have withdrawn.

You're quite right my vote will not have any effect, but it's my disappointment in labours manifesto not being radical enough, as our campaign is all about change, it doesn't read as change, and as Nick Robinson said it is a very different to their 2019 manifesto, which I happened to have liked. If labour don't really mean change I may not vote because it's all about fully backing someone ideas going forward, I hope he is just saying it to win and then reverts to the 2019 manifesto, but then that makes him a liar just like the Tories and that would make me feel uncomfortable with him being in charge.

For the record I think it's a fvcking stupid idea regardless of penalties.

The lack of detail about the penalties, their grand kids will be the first ones to do it - if they do 23 days volunteering will they go to jail? No one knows!

I've never voted for any party that I believe has got everything right, and I've never fully backed someone's ideas. It's always voting for the least worst. Obviously it's your call, but I've always seen not voting as saying you're happy with the current incumbent

Candidates can’t be stood down now. The deadline has passed and ballot papers have started to be issued.
