What the Farage is he talking about?

Of course, we need higher birthrates, but we’re not going to get higher birthrates in this country until we can get some sense of optimism. And we need a complete 180 shift in attitudes.

I mean, god, doesn’t Rachel Reeves make you want to reach for the cry tissues? It’s all so miserable, it’s all so declinist.
Yes, birth rates tend to increase in times of relative prosperity. No, it’s not because Rachel Reeves is acting as some kind of inverse aphrodisiac. “All this incessant talk of growth is really putting me off”.

It's quite incredible that a one policy 'party', or private limited company, can get their policy adopted and implemented by another party, have the policy proven to be a complete unmitigated disaster from every single aspect, but continue to exist and grow further.

Since we aren't in the EU any more, what policies do Reform voters now think they are voting for ?

It is mental. Anyone with young kids can outline how much it costs for childcare so we other you lose an income to make living very very hard given crazy house prices and everything else or you pay c100 quid a day for childcare.

The irony is the right normally shout “if you can’t afford kids then don’t have them” and then people don’t and they are now at fault.

Maybe the penny has dropped that no babies means more immigrants needed to look after the oldies.

2. Stopping the boats.
3. An end to hand-outs to foringers.
4. Support President Gas. Sorry, Trump.
5. Getting rid of the wasteful NHS and hospital waiting lists.

Reform targets high-turnout voters that haven't done particularly well for themselves in life and are old and bitter about it. Their policy is simple: they give their target demographic a group of people to blame.

But surely, being born into a free education, having your health being looked after from birth to death and having a social security system for people who are really unlucky, there can only be one person left to blame if you haven't taken advantage of all of those ???

Oh, that's right, it can't be me whose failed to take advantage of everything I've been given ... IT MUST BE DOWN TO THEM, WHOEVER THEY ARE

You're absolutely right. There are a number of disadvantaged youngsters who don't get the same chances but they're a minority. For the vast majority the UK is a land of opportunity, but no-one wants to take responsibility for their own failings. It's very attractive when someone tells you that it's all the fault of the EU or a dispropotionately low number of people coming over on boats.

I’m certain it’s that. The racist simpleton’s counter to “we need immigrants due to our ageing society”.

People need to just lie back and think of England more.

Farage is talking nonsense here. Under the so-called golden years of the Thatcher government, the UK birth rate declined from 1.91 to 1.82. It didn't start going up until the second Blair government and started declining again when the Tories got in. It's now at a historical low.

And the latest figures from the ONS are from 2023 so definitely nothing to do with Labour. He’s just taking his usual cheap shots.

Lots of factors involved in birth rates. Initially it looks to have declined under Thatcher, but that would be down to the Cold War effect. It then rises until 1992 and drops back to 1979 levels. After 2000 it grows sharply and has dropped a little recently. So many factors involved in these things. Austerity after the financial crash would probably have been one.
