Ward signs for Albion

lbion have made a second swoop on transfer deadline day, netting QPR playmaker Nick Ward on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old Australian midfielder has played 21 games for the R's since arriving from Perth Glory in the summer, scoring one goal, in the 2-0 win over Southend in August.

An exciting flair player, Ward's progress has been watched by manager Dean Wilkins and Chairman Dick Knight since last October, when they spotted him playing in a reserve team game for the Londoners.

Wilkins told seagulls.co.uk, "I watched him in October and spoke to Gary Waddock, who brought him to QPR. He speaks highly of him.

"He's a very attack-minded midfield player and he will bring much-needed competition to the squad."

Ward has been selected for the Australian national squad - although he has yet to make his debut - and only narrowly missed out on a place for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

He is also on standby for the Socceroos' friendly with Denmark next week to be played, ironically, at Loftus Road.

Ward also scooped the Australian League 'Rising Star' award in 2006 and was included in a 'Who's Who' of the best young players to watch on the official FIFA website.

A group of Albion fans are already threatening to tear up their season tickets because the club have signed another player called Ward.

"It's a disgrace" claimed 42 year old former ticket inspector Gearld Spazz, "Peter Ward would be turning in his grave at the thought of his name being taken in vain by a man descended from convicts. I demand a free scarf as compensation, and the right to start 100 threads a day about whether or not I will renew next season"

Describing the difference between English and Australian football, he said, "The game is a lot slower over in Australia, mainly because of the heat, whereas here it's a lot quicker with not as much time on the ball.

"I like to play good football, that's what I've always tried to do. I like to get the ball down and pass it, get forward and score goals."

Sounds like a young Frank Lampard jnr.

Good move.

On wikepidia:

Nick Ward (born March 24, 1985 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia) is an Australian football (soccer) player. He currently plays as an attacking midfielder for English side Queens Park Rangers.

His efforts in the inaugural A-League season of 2005-06 resulted in him becoming the first player to win the A-League's Rising Star Award with Perth Glory, along with also winning the Perth Supporter's Player of the Year, and also the Smokefree WA Coach's Award.

After his season had concluded with Perth, Ward was selected by Australia in an extended squad for its opening Asian Cup qualifier with Bahrain. Ward was named on the bench, but did not get used.

Following the end of the first A-League season, Nick Ward had trials with Leicester City however, much to the annoyance of Football Federation Australia, he joined QPR in the English Championship prior to the 2006-07 season. According to Tribal Football.com, in December 2006 Socceroos manager Graham Arnold believed that Ward (lacking game time under the management of QPR at the time) should be playing either in the English Premier League or in Europe, where there was better ball delivery and midfield play than in the English Championship. Those comments could be interpreted as a preliminary reason not to select Ward in forthcoming Socceroos friendlies.

when the website says flair player on the front page, does that mean we can get excited?? and will the fans really like him not like he is going to run all day after lost causes cos that is not what flair players do is it. I'll give it 2 games before the moans start and he gets told to start running.

The albion faithful know best!!
