I'll ask again, how do you square doing more with cutting the budget? You said yourself the agency could have done more. So how do you square this?

It's not just about money, it's about devising a plan by consulting the experts, then costing the plan, then implementing it.

The government have thrown short-term money at flooding by hiring in dredging plant and machinery, this having already sold the publicly-owned dredging plant and machinery at a fraction of the cost a few years earlier.

And the government have done neither up north. As I said, wilful neglect. You can bet your bottom dollar if this happened in the South, in a Tory voting or marginal area Cameron would have done more. Oh.........

It's amazing that people will berate BG for his posts, when there are these constant political "point scoring threads" on a football message board. Going off topic, can be amusing, entertaining and interesting, but soap box spouting about one's political preferences can become incredibly boring. Perhaps Bozza could introduce a "Political Jousting" section, where all this twaddle could be isolated.

That's not going to happen is it. Bozza is one of the main instigators of the boring, political point scoring on here.

Do you know i could have sworn the thread title read "Nice to see the Environment Agency boss is finally back from his Carribean holiday", which is a bit of a clue to whether you want to look at the thread, or even comment on it.
I am sure there are quite a few threads on here that do not contain "soap box spouting about one's political preferences", actually they are not that hard to find.

Owning a 1.5m flat in London and a 1m house in Barbados seems pretty luxurious to me.

Thats appalling isnt it,successful businessman and now on £100,000 a year buys himself a nice house and holiday home

The bloke has no morals at all.You are right to point out his Tory failings

They're building a big new flood defence scheme too.

Only so much can flow through Lewes......Building higher banks etc will make things worse if/when these new defences are Breached...Believe we had about six inches of rain for 2000 floods...With changing weather patterns ten inches in 24 hours not unrealistic in next few years.

Agree in spades but it is his business to do what he wants with, thereby setting an example to all.

Of course, but I would worry about boring to death and winding up my customers just for the sake of pretending that you know everything about politics and how great his political party is and how crap all the others are. Politics is a very emotional and dangerous subject to discuss, and religion.

What have I done, I am now going to get loads of figures and stats about how many have joined this board compared to how many no longer post and how many political threads I have replied to etc etc.
I'm off, happy new year to you all.

You mean that it is similar to what Silliband threatened when Labour announced they would cancel a whole raft of road building projects in the south in their election manifesto? Including the A27 upgrades. Works both ways you know.

Anyway, reduction in spending on flood defences, or reduction in NHS spending? Your call..........or if neither of these is palateable to you, where would you reduce spending that we cannot afford?

I would have taken the 247m shortfall I indicated earlier out of the 5bn this mess is going to cost. Underpinning pretty much everything in an economy is infrastructure. It's no good if it's 4ft under water.

How about not cutting taxes for millionaires or how about companies paying their fare share of tax which would then pay for adequate flood defences ?
