Why does the NHS need more funding? The current government has poured money into the health service.

The NHS needs to target its money more effectively i.e on acute medical and surgical services. At the moment it having to spend money in too many directions i.e. IVF and providing beds for elderly people because there is no where else for them to go.

Its the same with schools. They are expected to provide services for kids and families virtually all day rather then just provide a good basic education. Whilst we continue to have ridiculous expectations of schools and hospitals they won't be able to provided us with what we really need despite the amount of money we chuck into them

if private healthcare and education where banned, it would put all the workers back in the public sector and force the governemt into sorting it all out fairly.

it'll never happen but it works perfectly in theory, just like communism !

A culture of failing to take reponsibility is RIFE in this country, and has led to abuse of the benefit system and people talking about handouts as their "right" despite never having done a day's work. Well who exactly is going to pay for these improvements then?

That is SPOT ON!

At the end of the day someone has to pay.

This is true, but countries such a Sweden also have a large and flourishing private schooling system. I think the key here is choice. Private schools should be allowed for those that want them but state schools should be funded to a similar standard.
This is very expensive however, and the countries you mention are all terrified as to how they can maintain the current level in services as the population ages and the working population declines.

If that's the case, I doubt whether something as socially divisive as the historical and class-sodden British private education system would be anything to try to emulate. It's a sad indictment of the political elite in this country that, despite spending vast amounts of time and public money on education since the war, they could never quite bring themselves to bite the hand that fed so many of them in the first place. I'd abolish them tomorrow.

Also when the NHS was founded it didn't take into account the advances in medical science. We have people in Hospital today that would of been dead 20 years ago.

You're saying the current NHS overcrowding problems stem from a policy of giving beds to living dead zombies for 20 years?
Wow, we really do break the big stories first on NSC!

I agree with the plastic fella to an extent. If we banned private schools and hospitals, it would ensure the WHOLE population has a stake in state services. You only have to look at the Scandinavian countries, Germany and Holland to see that everything the state provides can be top class. The main problem is that the whole process would take the best part of 2 decades before we saw any benefit - the reason being that you would be attempting to change the culture of the country in doing so, and this can take at least a generation. And I for one don't want my kids being guinea-pigs during this process. Therefore, if I need to, I will pay for private education & healthcare despite the fact that it makes my blood boil considering the tax I pay.

But if we are to improve the state provided services without paying for it exponentially, then this is what needs to happen in the long run. A cultural shift NEEDS to occur, and not just from the middle classes who accept the status quo, moan about the levels of taxes they pay, and still spend their savings on private schooling to ensure a decent education for their kids (sorry plastic, but it's not snobbery - they really DO). A culture of failing to take reponsibility is RIFE in this country, and has led to abuse of the benefit system and people talking about handouts as their "right" despite never having done a day's work. Well who exactly is going to pay for these improvements then?

For me, these are the two sections of society which government after government need to change attitudes, and continually fail to do so (because their are no votes in it).

Sensible post Sim. Now where's the pyjamas pic?

Very funny but sadly you are not far from the truth. There are many people who lie in hospital beds who have no quality of life. Who are kept alive by drugs and being fed through their stomachs. They are usually long term patients as they are hard to place in nursing homes. It quite distressing to observe.

And know I am not advocatng euthanasia just pointing out that this all cost the NHS a lot of dosh

This is a subject close to my heart. My dear old Nana was a victim of NHS cutbacks. She was on a ventilator for her breathing when the doctor gave us the sad news, they were going to have to turn off the machine. They needed the plug for the kettle in the staff room. Apparantly they couldn't have tea and Nana.

I know that there are a fair few people holding up hospital beds that shouldn't be in hospital. Unfortunately they have nowhere to go once they have recuperated,so they have to stay put.

The gay thing really is on your mind 24/7 isn't it? For someone who's supposedly not gay, you talk about it a lot.

Oh and everyone established yesterday that you were owned several times yesterday by various people, including me, and that was before you were arguing the merits of those rotting rugby girls.

Keep geeking.
