If it can be of any use at all in saving lives and the economy, why wouldn't you? Some very odd people about unfortunately that will cause this thing to drag on and on.

there needs to be a significant presence in close proximity, 15min within 2 meters, for the system to alert you as needing to isolate/test. passing someone in the street or shopping aisle shouldnt trigger a warning.

That clears up one of my worries. Outside of the home I doubt I have any close contacts for that length of time

No because there is a need for a swab test result, before the app looks to see who has been in contaact with the covid carrier.

So it requires a positive test for me to be alerted of proximity, not just someone reporting symptoms?

That's my understanding, it's a safety feature to stop someone using the app to say they have symptons then going to as many crowded places as possible to get everyone else to isolate.
You need to have had a test, the test result will provide you with a code which you then input into your phone, and only after that does anyone else's phone get a message that they may have been in contact with you.

After posting about how everyone should download it, I have discovered I can't because my phone is too old

As someone who made a whole career based on technology I don't know whether I should be ashamed or proud, that I have made it from Geek to complete Luddite in just 10 years. I probably should get a new phone anyway, so anyone know who does the best deals on Omsung Phines

Thanks. I figured there must be some kind of security measure in place as there are plenty of numpties out there who would treat it as the new Pokémon go and report symptoms then spend their days running round scanning QR codes

Yeah...me too I have a feeling the main thing this app will do for me is to remind me just what an anti-social misanthrope I really am. The odds of me getting within 2 metres of anyonefor any length of time is almost zero, outside my close family (and even then...rarely).

In fact, I can't really work out how middle-age British men are catching this thing!*

search "covid track and trace" from Play Store - installed and configured in under a minute.

Can't be doing with all this non-compliance conspiracy nonsense - since I don't partake of terrorism or espionage I don't give a monkeys if some spook from MI6 or GCHQ wants to track when I go to Tescos or wherever.

What I might find useful is a text from NHS to tell me than when I was in Tesco between 3pm and 3:15pm yesterday, some one who has subsequently tested positive for Covid was in the shop at the same time and would I like to come along for a covid test to put my mind at rest that I have / haven't contracted it too.

There aren't enough tests for 'putting people's minds at rest', but take your point.

I wonder how this actually works?

For instance I was in the supermarket at lunch, for around 15-minutes. During that time I passed a few of the same people several times. I was probably within 2 m of them for a matter of seconds, albeit spread over maybe 15 mins. I wonder if I would get a notification if one of them tested positive?

Your text will come from Serco not the NHS who aren’t involved in developing or managing this particular piece of software. They are just the fall guys when it fails as it inevitably will (again).

And no my phone won’t allow me to download it. Same as too many others

Being a bit of an oldie my phone is pretty ancient and doesn't have smart phone capabilities. I do have a tablet - can I get the app on this?
