Think your figures are out of date by over 20 years for German Universities. It's getting closer to 60%.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/584155/first-year-students-share-germany/

http://dref.de/en/research/student-numbers-in-germany/

1.3 million Germans enrolled on VET (vocational) pathways in 2017:
https://wenr.wes.org/2018/06/could-germanys-vocational-education-and-training-system-be-a-model-for-the-u-s

Whereas 0.5 million graduated from German unis:
http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2018-08/23/c_137413694.htm
This included 50,000 overseas students.

Germans more numerously embark on VET, with a dual approach of on job training and academic study.

Brits do academic degrees.

We’ve had discussions on this in the recent past with Herr Tubthumper. He explained that the vocational path whist in contracts with eg Mittelstand businesses was the German way and very successful. Let’s await his take.

I’m not disputing they have that pathway, but your percentages are wrong, twice as many students went to university as they did VET.

And Weststander's figure of 55% for UK unversities was wrong too - although only slightly. It's just over 50%, not 55%

But it's missing the point, I happen to agree that there should be greater emphasis on vocational training with fewer going to universities. I also believe that there should be more flexibility on university courses, with more intense two-year courses available or perhaps a mix of on-site learning with MOOCs,

I have not looked up the figures but in principle I believe you are correct. The VET and apprenticeships etc play a massive part of life here, from the electrician’s periodic need to learn and pass tests to keep their qualification current to the skilled and very skilled workforce. Two things which, imho prohibit this working in the U.K.

1) I am pretty certain having to take periodic exams would be resisted as “red-tape” etc.
2) For this two work you actually need a balanced economy with a strong engineering and manufacturing base. The U.K. doesn’t have this.

amazes me we still have a single path for higher education (NVQ largely dismissed), can only assume that universities are resistant to any change.

Yes, it's derailing the thread a bit but with all the other changes going on in the world, it's crazy that universities haven't changed the fundamental way they operate since they were set up (apart from there being less Latin).

What's more, no political party has ever proposed any radical changes. Yes, fees were introduced but the basic courses are the same.

To get the thread back on track, one thing I was impressed with in the last Labour manifesto was a commitment to adult learning - this really should be part of a manifesto in future

Lisa Nandy was impressive when interviewed by Andrew Neil.

I agree she is the best candidate I have seen so far. I also think Boris would hate to face her in the Commons as he will come across as a posh bully.

I can't believe the members (I am not) would be daft enough to vote for RLB and more Corbynista ideology but watch this space..

Labour will be show boating all these amazing new supporters joining anytime soon [emoji23][emoji23]

RLB now ahead in the polls, continuing Corbyn’s successes....,

That's me and the misses signed up. Never voted Labour and living where I do, probably never will. In the meantime we need someone to call out the crooks at the helm

They haven’t even launched their official bids yet.

Britain will never vote in a hard left government, the only way Labour will win again is from the centre. They also need to get Scotland back, they've been left out in the cold by Westminster...
