Newhaven incinerator, anyone else seen it?

I think this thread is a good example of why a lot of people in Sussex dislike Brighton and Hove immensely. ( not me by the way, but the attitudes of some people who live in the city, well..)

I moved to Denton not long before the incinerator was built. One of the things i loved was the drive down the a26 from the beddingham roundabout. The ouse valley truly is a lovely bit of countryside. At the mouth of the river sits the scruffy litlle port of Newhaven, a place that is the definition of seen better days. However it's mostly low rise and no worse than Shoreham harbour and on a considerably smaller scale.

We now have a futuristic power station that is much bigger than any other construction in the town. It sits just to the north of newhaven, up river from the worst parts of the derelict port and completely dominates views . And it is this that is the worst aspect of the project the thing is completely out of scale with it's surroundings.

Now I'm not in a position to complain, i moved after permission was granted, and tbh we need more power generation and we need to deal with our refuse. However I can understand the bitterness of my neighbours who have had this thing foisted upon them, and sympathise with the belief that Newhaven was picked because it was far away from the leafy middle class ghettos of the councillors who voted for it.

If it had to go somewhere in Sussex then Newhaven seems a pretty good choice, as probably one of the most industrial places around. Will also bring much needed jobs.

Trust me nearly all the industry has gone in Newhaven. Apart from the very small companies, the only large ones remaining are SBFI, Cash Basis, Concord Lighting. Parker Pen closed last year. At one time Parker Pen and Bevan Funnell used to employs 1000's of people. Its sad to see Parker Pen boarded up. I believe this will be re-developed with new homes and a new ASDA. So that's got to be a positive.

As regards Newhaven Town that's finished too which at one time was a busy place. This has gone because of the Supermarkets. I suppose its just progression, however part of the problem with Newhaven Town Centre was the lack of support from the local council. They added some new lights and relaid the pedestrian area but they never promoted the town to new business.

Newhaven is turning in to more retail than industry.
