... If there's really no issue with health etc, why not build the incinerator in the middle of Brighton?

wouldnt be popular i'd agree, but on a practical level no space and poor access. Newhaven is the nearest thing to an industrial town in the area (or the county?), so as unattractive as it might be, its the least worst place for it and quite convienent on practical grounds. no doubt the driver for the local politians are the jobs it creates, some might see that as a way to reverse decline.

I drive past it every day. Hideous as it is it's not exactly ruining the delightful harbour town of Newhaven, is it?

Fired up now

The more I see this thing the more I hate it, and just to think how LDC held back our stadium when this thing actually had planning permission.

I understand totally our rubbish needs to go somewhere because we can't keep filling landfill. What I do have a problem with is how it looks. It's bloody awful and towers over everything.

I don't know how else they could have built it, but the new waste treatment works in Peacehaven has been sunk in to the ground and is now slowly being landscaped. Once complete you won't hardly notice it.

I see it every other Saturday when I watch Lewes, it's looked like something else when i saw it from the angle near the hollow, but when your on the train, it looks like something out of London.

I'm glad this thread's been bounced. When I first read this thread I hadn't seen it, but on Saturday we went to look at some houses over Denton way. What on EARTH is the problem? Firstly it's well designed, and secondly it's been built in an area that looks as if it's already been used for industrial activity (i.e. it's not just been plonked down in the middle of some unspoilt valley.) Given what I'd read I was expecting some huge and hideous, brutally functional factory; instead I was pleasantly surprised to see a quite tasteful modern building and yes I can see it being a tourist attraction.

Got no problems moving into that area and, given what we've been through, I'm a bit disappointed with the nimby attitude on this thread.

Its not just our own rubbish... its located there as they will be shipping in tonnes of french waste to burn it over Newhavens residents.

There were 10's of thousands who signed petitions against this and LDC did not listen. Easy money to made from France

... er ... NO.

I remember, in December 2005, when I presented the petition to Lewes District Council in support of the stadium - signed by 5,165 residents of the district in just over a week - saying that this was more signatures than the anti-incinerator petition had managed to achieve in months.

I also remember attending anti-landfill meetings in Lewes District, where the local MP told everyone that incineration was the answer to the threat of land-grabbing for future waste disposal.

Er... Yeah

My late step dad was involved in one of a number of anti campaign groups..... the largest group got 11000 signatures

"In spite of over 16,000 objections and only 5 letters of support, members of East Sussex County Council's Planning Committee approved Veolia's proposal for an Incinerator at Newhaven Quay to burn 50% of East Sussex and Brighton & Hove's domestic waste by 5 votes to 1."

Portabello was built in the 70's, that does smell lol
However this is a brand new plant, technology has moved in the last 30 years. I doubt there will be any smell at all. I will let you know.

Its great, all the shit from Brighton pumped to Peacehaven
All the rubbish from Brighton burnt in Newhaven

Someone has been stitched up here lol.

The problem with that petition is that it came far too late. The battle to stop an incinerator at Newhaven was lost as soon as all parties (including the LibDems) voted to support the East Sussex and Brighton & Hove Waste Local Plan way back in 2002.

waste local plan: Timetable
