Just the award of 6 runs from the overthrow when it should have been 5.
I remember hearing something like that after the game, but didn't understand it. Something about the runners crossing.

I get the narrative about cricket being the winner but that was really poor by England. It started with southee slogging us on day 3 and because stokes wanted to enforce the follow on he kept bowling leech who kept getting smacked. They obviously should have batted again with a four man attack with one in their 40s and one not far behind. But it was seen as the aggressive play to enforce so they went for it.

As for that chase. Really poor. Crawley looks all at sea. Duckett on a pitch with a little bit of bounce looks like a coach giving pre-play slip catching practice and the tail is a laughably bad.

I fully appreciate that we have been pretty spectacular this winter forcing victories against pakistan on very flat pitches and last summer we hammered a very poor South Africa but I am pretty fearful for the summer. The Aussie bowlers will be licking their lips at our batting (apart from root and brook). I am a huge leach fan but we really miss the moeen who could bat (I appreciate that was some time ago) and woakes’ runs lower down are also very useful.

I really hope I am proved wrong but the ashes worry me a little!

He's injured
According to Brendan he's going:
"Stokesy's knee is just something we have to monitor. He's off to the IPL where there is slightly less demand on his conditioning so hopefully he'll be fine. He's a tough bloke. He'll find a way to get through and I know he's determined to lead this team to Ashes glory as well. We look forward to it."

If an overthrow goes to the boundary, it is the 4 plus any runs completed before the thrower threw the ball. In the case of the final, they counted the dive that Stokes made that hit the ball to the boundary and awarded 6 runs instead of 5 plus Stokes was then on strike instead of Rashid. Given it was so rare an event, they concluded there wouldn't have been many umpires if any who would have spotted it.

If you are still pretty fearful following England's last year of Test cricket, then I assume you've never gone into an Ashes series anything but...

Which is fair enough, Ashes series can be like that, been quite a few positives to dwell on rather than just negatives though. Funny how teams are poor when you hammer them.

So, in short...

- England haven't been good enough.
- England aren't going to be good enough.

Tough crowd!

A couple of things stand out here for me, over and above the what ifs and might have beens:
1. England and Ben Stokes have been as impressive in defeat post match as they have been following the many victories over the last 12 months.
2. If a sporting team that I support is going to lose, there is no other team I would rather lose to than the NZ men's cricket team.

South Africa are dreadful at the moment. It is sad to see. Their batting is a joke!

Don’t get me wrong. I love this current approach, I am just worried that we get carried away and forget about some basics.

I really hope I am wrong about Duckett and Crawley but I just don’t see them coping vs Aussies. I fear it could be a bit like when we tried Jason Roy.

As per the post I just made. Maybe I am being a bit negative but our batting has been on some really flat pitches and I fear that the Aussies will go after leach. If that happens and we have a three man attack who hardly get a breather because our innings don’t last long then I worry about a summer in the field!

Stokes is a massive worry. He has revolutionised how we play but he is getting close to brearley (one for the kids there) in terms of specialist captain!

I am looking forward to this ashes series more than I have any since 05 though. It should be fun. I have decided I am not going this time though. I try to go to two or three days of the tests every summer but prices now are taking the pi55. 130 quid for the Eric hollies stand. No thanks. This is from someone who spent 2.5 weeks in Antigua going to 6 matches in the 07 World Cup. I love cricket but the prices are getting ridiculous.

Oh dear oh dear

Went to bed with Root and Stokes making a fight of it and woke up to find we have lost by 1 run and thrown the series win away.

Sorry but the Bazball decision to enforce the follow on was wrong (even if we had won). Anderson and Broad need an innings rest between bowling as proven by the fact that between them they took 7 wickets in the first innings and only 1 in the 2nd.

I think the declaration that England will try and win at all costs is a vanity project that plays into the hands of our opposition. They can predict what we are going to do.

Imagine us being 1-0 up at Stoke with ten minutes remaining and then losing after RDZ decides to take off Steele and put Lamptey in goal and bring on another striker to try and make it 2-0.

It is not England's task to save Test cricket it is England's task to win Test series.

All this on top of the Fulham loss has upset me.

Australia aren't necessarily a team to be feared at the moment though either, they have their own deficiencies especially away from home.

No, I get that.

As an England sports fan, as with footballing World Cups, Ashes series come with huge amounts of excitement and hope but so often end in huge disappointment and the shit-or-bust approach we now see could easily lead to a horrific implosion. The old way of ensuring a test can't be lost before trying for a win provides some comfort against the bastard Aussies, certainly!

Ben Stokes / Mike Brearley - I'm old enough to remember and, yes, I thought exactly the same last night!

You have to give NZ a lot of credit for their follow-on batting performance. It's easy in hindsight, but they had the best of a pitch which is usually known to get better for batting as matches go on.

As an exercise in Stokes's development as a captain, and McCullum's as a coach, this could prove invaluable in series to come. NZ were the no.1 test side over the past few years for a reason.

Test cricket has been dying on it's arse for a long time. Teams going into series like this and shutting up shop in a test match just to secure a series win at the expense of the spectacle within that test match has always been a recipe for a slow demise of the format. England rightly are treating a test match as a winnable game in it's own right.

Look at the results in the 2 years before Stokes to now. If that is a vanity project, I'll take it thanks.
