Why? Commentator saying he took 1 run, but could have been 3 - but no it couldn't, it would have been 1 and then Leach facing more deliveries.

Leach and Anderson aren't good enough to survive this.
Problem is, if they are setting a field for singles, and they are not being taken, NZ are being given more opportunity at a batsman who needs boundaries or twos. Foakes is a capable batsman, but he forcing risk into his game. I'd rather let it flow, try to forage the strike, but trust Leach a bit more- because Foakes has to take more risks in his own game.

EDIT- Like there. But he got away with it. Hopefully he'll get away with a few more.

Of course that's the field they're going to set, but if he takes the single then Leach is then going to face 5 balls, and not really have much chance of a single himself. So England get 1 run, and Leach faces 5 balls.

Whereas if he turns down the singles, he gets more attempts to get a 2 or 4 and then a single on the 5th ball.

They may not make it, but I think it's the right strategy.

Whatever happens, this has been a great advert for greatest format of the game.

Blimey. How was first ball not called wide? It was a foot over his head and down leg.

They get the controversy this time. Previous ball was a wide I'm sure. But it doesn't matter, if we have to lose in this way I don't mind it being the Kiwis. It's been a wonderful match to watch.

New Zealand have won by the barest of all margins...

Yep, played in a good competitive spirit, great to watch.

it was a wide ball though, so it’s a tie.

Yeah, but then we need to share the World Cup with them.

Great 5 days at the Basin. Clearly a wide for the penultimate ball (from where I was sitting!) - but a joy to have been there and experienced it!

We won an Ashes getting someone caught behind who’s hand was off the bat, so we’ll have to take a wide not being called on the chin.

Great to be here to see 9 days of test cricket for the equivalent of £97 . Wonderful to and fro today. Managed to see all today . Flew out of Wellington at 18.50 . At Auckland now 6 hours to wait for a flight to Kuala lumpa . My number 1 bucket list ticked ,grass bank cricket in NZ .
