New York Over Xmas

Booking 7 nights in NY from 21st December to December 28th.
Has anyone been to NYC over Xmas, and/or can anyone recommend hotels close to Rockefeller/Times Sq.

Salisbury Hotel & Hotel St. James both look decent so far.

This will be my first time in the Big Apple so any recommendations would be appreciated

My recommendation would definitely be to walk to as many places as possible, the things you see that you would've missed taking public transport is immense!! Bleaker St is a must-do for shopping etc, good few record shops as well if that's your thing & where CBGBs once stood.

Wrap up warm!! We went in January & it's bloody freezing! Just be aware that if your going out shopping, you'll be forever taking your coat(s) on & off as you go in & out of each shop as they whack the heating up so try & not wear the worlds bulkiest coat that will be a pain to carry.

Went for my first time a few years ago in November. All the christmas decorations were up including the tree infront of the skating rink at the Rockerfeller. Stayed at the Barclay Intercontinental on Lexington. Walked to Times Square in ten minutes. Go in the 'Lift' to the top floor of Rockefeller in the evening-gob smacking!! Then go to Empire State during the day - the view down to Staten Island and The Statue of Liberty is brilliant. Saw 'Chicago' one evening although my brother in law fell asleep because of all the walking we had done that day!! We visited the site of the Twin Towers and saw Rob Eatons name on the wall of the nearest Fire Station---very moving. Finally if you have any money left take the helicopter ride up the river---on a par with any theme park ride!!!

Take a look at the Millennium UN Plaza..(now called One UN). Lovely hotel. Swimming pool on the 27th floor with amazing views of midtown. 5 mins walk to Grand Central, 10 mins to Times Sq. I can highly recommend it.

We spent New Year in New York a few years ago (combined it with Boston) and had a fantastic time.

We did all the usual tourist things, and as far as NY Eve is concerned booked a table at Schula's Restaurant (as in Don Schula, coach of Miami Dolphins fame.) it's very cloce to Times Square, which means you can eat, and then come out of the restaurant and be very close to where the ball is dropped, as otherwise the roads are closed off and you can't get very close.

Spend lots of time in Central Park, walk wherever possible and don't forget to take the staten Island Ferry, it's free and a great way to get some fantastic views.

Don’t just restrict yourself to the NYC tourist stuff. Head over to Brooklyn and see the hipsters in Williamsburg, and the Brooklyn Brewery tour.

The essentials:

Best boozer – Jimmy’s Corner 140W 44th Street. One of the narrowest dive bars in NYC run by an ex – boxing trainer. Cheapest pint of Sam Adams for the Times Square area and a good mix of city types, regulars and boxing fans.

Best Albion friendly bar – Foleys, Lots of Albion memorabilia including shirts and the owner Shaun is a big Brighton fan

Best Brit pub – Jones Wood Foundry on the Upper East Side, but I’m biased as it’s my local

Best curry house : IMHO Brick lane Curry House in the East Village.

Second everything L14 has to say including coming over to Brooklyn and Williamsburg - Brooklyn Bowl (5 mins from my gaff) is part of the Brooklyn Brewery and has quality beers and food - plus decent reasonably priced bowling as well.

Walk everywhere - bring comfy shoes and a decent hat, scarf and gloves as its bloody freezing in Dec / Jan.

If you want to catch some sports then youve got the Knicks at the Garden or I would go for Tickets to see the Nets at the brand new Barclays Center in downtown brooklyn - was there today and it looks pretty cool !

FYI - I will be doing the reverse this xmas and heading back to good old sussex by the sae to catch my first game at the Amex - trying to score the corporate box for the 'wall game
