All the local shops round here have upped their game admirably. During the darkest days of lockdown, offie could be relied on for - in addition to the essentials - hard to source items like eggs! pasta! tea bags! bog roll! The emporium formerly known as Mr Shah's (motto: 'Never Knowingly Underpriced') has undergone a complete makeover. Out with Happy Shopper, in with Shopper Happy To Pay A Bit More For A Bit More Quality, much of it organic. Even the 'organic' Butcher's has raised it's game with a nice display of fruit n veg, tho the effect is as always somewhat spoiled by just about all the staff seedily smoking right outside the front door. Not a good look. Oh, and great to see Jenny's chippie back up and running in the evenings. Slightly further afield, the Open Market had been, er, open, throughout, with proper social distancing observed. And - best of all IMHO! - Bangers Pies in Baker Street has nearly their full range of gorgeous wares available. Text them with your order, book a pick-up time, fill yer boots at £2 per glorious pie. Great stuff by all our local shops during lockdown. Many of them not just surviving but FLOURISHING

I feel so lucky, I have always had the Open Market, Five Ways and Sunny foods on my doorstep. Plus we now have Waste Not, Store and HISBE who all do refills of most household things and you can buy what you need quantity wise. The only thing I struggle to get outside a supermarket are Corn Tacos.

I love Aldi for certain things (Cheese, veg, and wine) but the meat is rank compared to our butcher or even Sainsburies.

That's interesting: Mrs Gwylan says that Aldi does meat pretty well, better than other supermarkets (I don't eat meat, so I can't comment) but the cheese isn't great (and I'll go along with that). The wine's OK but I think that other places are better.

My shopping habits haven't really changed that much since the lockdown TBH - making less bread as I can't get the flour bit now - but not much else

I agree , have converted to getting veg / fruit delivery’s from my local greengrocers , meat from my lovely butchers & fish from a lovely local fishmongers . I get other stuff from Waitrose .

In Hove I’m fortunate there’s lots of choice of decent independent places to shop & who will deliver as well. I know lots of people who live in other parts of the country who have to rely on supermarket deliveries .

Price wise it works out about the same as buying everything in Waitrose but the quality is just as good if not slightly better and I was quite surprised at that because in my experience Waitrose quality of meat , veg, fish etc is largely better than the other supermarkets with exception of M & S which is similar. I must sound like a right snob ! Lol

I think Waitrose is generally good, M&S have lowered their game a little in places I think, basically in an attempt to be more competitive with the bigger supermarkets and supplement the decline of home wares and clothes etc.

Yup, I'm a recent convert to Aldi- generally better quality at much better prices. A £100 shop at Aldi is usually a £150 shop in Tesco from experience.

On the left as you walk in from the London Road end, about halfway. They don't open until later in the day (midday) at the moment.

Yes Sunny foods is brilliant always use it, really good for vegan stuff as well.

I'd be the same if it wasn't for one thing, Asda have these bad boys, and there is no substitute at Aldi for these if I make a home made Kebab.

Do they do reduced salt and sugar stuff? Mrs Jakarta is diabetic so that rather forces us to the larger Sainsburys and Waitrose Stores that have all that sort of stuff. Would be happy to reduce a shop costing by 50%. Oh what is the Wine selection like!

Have 2 very good Butchers in Storrington and and even better one in Pulborough (tragically for my waistline there is an award winning Pie Shop opposite!). Also a very good Farm Shop just outside Storrington, so veg and eggs come from there.

Aldi for us too, when I can be bothered to make my way down to Portslade, and join the queue. Good food, huge money savings.

But we do always also have to visit an Asda or Sainsbury’s, to get items Aldi don’t sell.

You may be interested to hear that sales in the Tesco in which I work has been consistently 30% up on last year week on week since the lockdown started and whilst we do not know the precise reasons, the main one seems to be that the social distancing in Aldi has been a free for all and there has been no attempt to adapt their customer service with tills etc. The general comment is that customers feel far safer in Tesco than the other supermarkets, particularly Aldi and Lidl. Plus Tesco now match prices on loads of items with Aldi which helps.

I'm not surprised although it could be the perception that a big store, will have everything, whereas comparatively small supermarket are deemed to be empty.
