The latest Golf is a brilliant car - massive step up from the previous generation, as well as the competition (and this is coming from a BIG Focus fan).
Yes, you might pay more than an Ibiza or Fabia, but the difference in quality is apparent, and it just does everything properly – steering, braking, rides and handles well, and the 1.4-litre TSI engine is wonderful. Price list I've got here says those models start at just over £18k.
The only thing that is annoying for me is a fairly wide C-pillar, which can make parking and visibility a bit of an issue, but this is a minor gripe. Boots a bit on a small side too, come to think of it.
Good luck.
It was the Mark 6 Golf that came out in 2008 that was the massive leap forward.
Bought a brand new one that year, and 4+ years on, it has been perfect.
Never had one fault, servicing incredibly cheap even at Caffyns and rare due to long life, lovely to drive, quiet, fantastic build quality.
Can't believe that I used to own a new Peugeot. Riddled with faults as time passed, uncomfortable, poor dealer customer service, and noisy.
