Me too, in the market for new car I mean; when I get home. I'm thinking of something krautish. Last car was a BMW Z4, good fun when the sun shines, which of course is few & far between these days. Before that was old shape Audi TT 225 Quattro. Best car I've ever had, by far. Going back even further VW Golf, & a good old Hocus Pocus. Before those, just some things I'd rather forget!
If I go cheap I might go for the Focus again; but if I buy with my heart it could well be Merc SLK Kompressor, just love the look of them.
I friggin love getting a new motor; I'm like a kid at Christmas.

Vauxhalls are shit. They undesteer like a ruptured camel and anything over 1.8 has terrible torque steer.

Avoid like the plague.

German cars just WORK. They are built properly and ultimlitly will last longer and save you money over the long term. German engineering is well know to be possibly the best in the world! Have a look for a BMW, Audi or a Volkswagen? My tip would be to go for a BMW as they are chain driven (as are many other cars) thus eliminating cam belt worries. Honestly will never buy a non German car again. Stear clear of Renault I've had 6 of those in 16 years and although they look nice, they f*** up all the time! Last four cars have been Audi, BMW, BMW and BMW!

We've had 4 brand-new Renaults (Meganes and a Laguna) in the last 10 years and they were all wonderful cars with few problems. Friend of mine drives a BMW which has been in his family for more than 25 years (it was his aunt's before he got it). We had a BMW for a while, and it was like driving a tank. Very heavy.

The wife has got a 2009 Kia Cee'd! gutless but runs and runs and you cabt argue with the 7 year warranty. I have a peugeot RCZ which in my opinion is one of the best looking cars on the road in its price bracket but bearing in mind its a new car, dealing with peugout is always an uphill battle! I moved over from an Audi and the difference in customer service is like chalk and cheese!

VW's are great quality. As others have said, most German cars are.

The passat's have become really nice cars in the last decade. The saloons look like they cost a lot more than what they do as well.

Just got a new Tiguan 2.0l TSi for the Mrs. Super little SUV. Only about 17k new here in Abu Dhabi. Have had to spend 500 quid on heat rejection tint though.

I'm after a new car as well.
Considering a Golf, a Focus c-max, seat ibiza or a fabia (wife doesn't like the fabia)

The latest Golf is a brilliant car - massive step up from the previous generation, as well as the competition (and this is coming from a BIG Focus fan).

Yes, you might pay more than an Ibiza or Fabia, but the difference in quality is apparent, and it just does everything properly – steering, braking, rides and handles well, and the 1.4-litre TSI engine is wonderful. Price list I've got here says those models start at just over £18k.

The only thing that is annoying for me is a fairly wide C-pillar, which can make parking and visibility a bit of an issue, but this is a minor gripe. Boots a bit on a small side too, come to think of it.

Good luck.

my vauxhall has been a thorn in my side recently but how many people do you think put "torque steer" on their checklist when looking into a new car.........especially a vauxhall?

Not true.
So you had 6 Renault's (French crap) followed by 4 decent German cars. That's hardly a fair representation of all the market has to offer.

German cars are indeed excellent, but they're not cheap, and they cost a lot to service. Japanese cars are also excellent, cheaper to buy and cheaper to run (although it does very much depend on the type of car you're after).

Each to their own mate. I've been through many, many different cars in my time of various makes and models. In my opinion, the renualt's were the ones that broke down the most/didn't work properly and the German cars have been the most reliable by far. Pay for what you get.

Strange as although there is a perseption that German cars are better built and therefore more reliable they never feature that highly in reliability surveys. Japanese cars always seem to come out on top. What car 2012 reliability survey:

that's because you don't drive like a f***ing idiot like some clearly do. the road isnt a racetrack and vauxhall's are absolutely fine on the road.

Do you know what, I actually agree with you on that. If you don't thrash the nuts off of a car they generally last. Don't rev the crap out of it when it's cold and make sure it has a regular service (oil and filter minimum) most vehicles will go on and on.

You are right there. I wouldn't know if any of the cars I have owned over the last 30 years under steered or over steered as I don't drive like a cock.

I work for vauxhall and have the insignia Sri. The funny thing is we have had a few people in who own German vehicles who have said that the insignia performs and handles better then its German counterparts. Just going by customer feedback. Also all brand new vauxhalls come with a lifetime warranty.

Not deluded at all I worked for VW and skoda before vauxhall. I've owned 3 golfs and a skoda Octavia vrs and don't get me wrong the're great cars but ill stick with the insignia better handling and the 160bhp Diesel engine is excellent.
