German cars just WORK. They are built properly and ultimlitly will last longer and save you money over the long term. German engineering is well know to be possibly the best in the world! Have a look for a BMW, Audi or a Volkswagen? My tip would be to go for a BMW as they are chain driven (as are many other cars) thus eliminating cam belt worries. Honestly will never buy a non German car again. Stear clear of Renault I've had 6 of those in 16 years and although they look nice, they f*** up all the time! Last four cars have been Audi, BMW, BMW and BMW!

Out of those 3 I'd go with the Astra. I like vauxhalls.

my thought: what an odd collection. a dull old favorite, a quirky 4wd cross over thing and a budget upstart brand (though looking alot better than previously)

Think about the overall cost of ownership! Yes a German car may cost a little more but you will more then get the difference back when you sell it!
German cars typically have longer service intervals then the French/jap stuff and are just better to drive!

... the French/jap stuff

i hope you're not seriously putting Japanese cars in the same bracket as French? unless something has drastically changed recently (and Toyota aside) Jap cars are super well built and usually wipe the floor with German brands at the low to mid range markets. i say this as a VW fanboi (even my one Ford was a German made Sierra). the problem with TCO with German brands is they are very expensive at the main dealer, when if they are supposed to be better quality you shouldnt need anything done. dont you worry, they will find stuff, because thats their business. buy a Merc and a friendly local garage who knows where to get the parts and how to to stuff (alot of specialised tools nowadays), and you will have a very low TCO over the (long) life of the car.
