I used them a lot during the Pandemic but I rarely order delivery these days. Especially now the weather is nicer, I'd much rather go out to eat or pickup from the restaurant. I guess I'm exception though, given the constant stream of delivery riders going full speed along the pavements on their electric bikes with no concern for their own or other people's safety.

Not sure if this video is available in the UK, but John Oliver made some interesting points on his show. None of the parties actually make any money out of these delivery apps. The delivery drivers/riders make a pittance and have to meet ridiculous timing demands (hence the pavement speeding). The restaurants get charged huge fees to use the app, often making a loss from an order. The delivery companies themselves don't make any money because of all the licensing fees etc. Just another example of a tech company trying to "shake up the industry" by ruining it for most people involved.

Yeah, I watched that John Oliver segment, quite eye opening.

It's one of those things where I'm fully aware of their shadiness but can't help myself from using them.

I do make sure to tip the delivery people well though.

Yes. It drives me made, it’s a bad deal for the restaurants, the service is shit, you typically spend more than phoning a restaurant direct.

Also I saw a Deliveroo bike deliver a subway from Chapel Road to a flat by Steyne Gardens on Friday evening !!! It’s a 5 minute talk.

The only time it’s semi useful is somewhere you don’t know - either a working lunch or a late bite to eat in another country. But that’s it.

I got a McDonald’s once at 1am while staying near Earls Court in London. After delivery & platform fees was like £18 for a big

Well, not the individual delivery people, they’re only trying to make a living. But as a concept, it goes against how I think humans should be behaving. Sitting on one’s arris, waiting for some underpaid, under-represented employee to deliver junk food is anathema to me.

This. My local coffee shop and pub are places I go to for social interaction and companionship, even when I’m taking away. I’ve met loads of lovely people….and they say the same

This in a nutshell. Convenience and cheapness often trump everything else including morals! We’re tired, busy people and predisposed to all those little chemicals in our brain that the thought of food generates!

Up in the northern part of the county in the wilderness of the Ashdown forest we can’t get any deliveroo or just eat and I’m ever so pleased. We have one curry, one Chinese, and one kebab that delivers so use those every now and then.

When we have been away I have been staggered at the price of the deliveries, they easily add on 20% to the cost of a takeaway for four people, even if we could get one of the megacorps delivering round here I wouldn’t (wife probably would though but I’d moan enough to nip that in the bud)

Although I don't order food to be delivered I have often wondered how a delivery driver makes any money. They have to pay for the upkeep of the moped plus petrol -how much are they going to make on taking a pizza 2 to 3 miles away ?

I’ve never once used Uber Eats or Deliveroo etc, in fact I’ve only probably had a curry or Chinese delivered by a local old boy in his Fiat Panda about half a dozen times in my life.

Going to get it is part of the pleasure, I order, walk down there (I appreciate my three favourites are all within a 10 minute walk) Have a pint while I wait or pop in the pub nearby, I inevitably bump into someone I know.

I know it’s all there so I don’t get my ear chewed off when they forget to deliver my wife’s poo bag of chopped onions or heaven forbid her thimble of Mango Chutney and the walk home sharpens my appetite.

Yes, in the winter it can get cold but I take an insulated bag and serve it on hot plates, Jobs a good un.

TBF the person ordering could be ill. Or have child care issues and cannot leave their home.

When I had COVID I used UberEats to deliver from the Co-Op which is a 2 minute walk.
