Read a thing the other day about how Uber Eats / Deliveroo / Just Eat etc. usage has remained at lockdown levels rather than returning to pre-pandemic levels.

I know I still order a fair bit. WFH it's all too easy for me to order something in. But never that KFC though, it is terrible.

Undoubtedly yes.

Even worse (in my mind) is the addition of Sainsburys Local etc to Just eat to deliver the ‘essentials’, or more probably a few beers/wine and cigarettes..

Could also be that many places that used to offer work canteens or equivalent have now closed them so people get together and treat themselves to a hot lunch delivery.

I do sometimes get peckish but I‘ve never had the urge to just eat a driver.

Eating out is the third biggest sector so not sure it’s any surprise. People want it delivered (still counted as eating out before the pedants rush) often so can watch TV at same time. This is literally what has happened I kid you not. People cannot be bothered to even collect their food. Delivered service is expected, and if you’re not giving Deliveroo or Uber Eats etc half your profit for the privilege, then you’ll soon be out of business. Half of something is better than half of nothing. The independent restaurants are at their mercy. Fall in or fall out and go do something else instead. Consumers especially younger ones have a love affair with chains and their free this and free that. Of course the entire sector is riddled with exploitation as it is when anything’s overly cheap. But who cares about animal or human welfare so long as the product is cheap convenient hot and tasty? 99.9% don’t give a flying f*** after a long day’s work. Just bring me the CHICKEN NOW!!!

This has also happened. Business and Industry sector has been decimated by home working. Meanwhile School children order Deliveroo too instead of going to dining halls. See it daily. Mopeds going to gates all time of day, especially where 6th forms exist. Kids have loads of disposable income. Parents give them thousands, and many make hustle incomes too

Why is any of it overpriced? How do you know, and even if so, isn’t that so subjective it doesn’t warrant even debating. Price is what you pay, value is what you get and all that!

we can use these observations as indicator of financial health of an area. may be there's not so much crisis round there.

I used them a lot during the Pandemic but I rarely order delivery these days. Especially now the weather is nicer, I'd much rather go out to eat or pickup from the restaurant. I guess I'm exception though, given the constant stream of delivery riders going full speed along the pavements on their electric bikes with no concern for their own or other people's safety.

Not sure if this video is available in the UK, but John Oliver made some interesting points on his show. None of the parties actually make any money out of these delivery apps. The delivery drivers/riders make a pittance and have to meet ridiculous timing demands (hence the pavement speeding). The restaurants get charged huge fees to use the app, often making a loss from an order. The delivery companies themselves don't make any money because of all the licensing fees etc. Just another example of a tech company trying to "shake up the industry" by ruining it for most people involved.

I enjoy walking round to the takeaway place to collect my food.

Carrying a bag of Chinese or fish and chips, getting whiffs of the food as you walk home, is part of the experience for me.

Plus I f***ing hate the delivery cyclists and moped mob that occupy every street corner and pavement outside restaurants. I’m glad to deprive them of my custom.

Well, not the individual delivery people, they’re only trying to make a living. But as a concept, it goes against how I think humans should be behaving. Sitting on one’s arris, waiting for some underpaid, under-represented employee to deliver junk food is anathema to me.

They’ll be feeding us the food next.

I'm not a big meat eater anyway but one thing I do love is a KFC chicken drumstick - just the drumstick. The bizarre thing is you can't order a bucket of them but can order a single drumstick .... but ... order more than one individual drumstick and the rest are 'breast' of chicken pieces rather than drumsticks
