Sometimes in football you have to be really harsh despite how much you want to see a player do well, Maupay is simply not good enough for this level if we want to go further as a club, nor are any of our strikers.

That being said our strikers weren’t exactly helped yesterday, we hardly created anything, it’s just our strikers aren’t clinical enough to finish the chances they do get.

That isn't 'harsh' it is dismissive. We can't sell him right now but we could bin him off into the reserves. You really thinks that's appropriate?

What I expect the manager to do is work with him and the rest of the squad so we achieve more in each game. It isn't all about one player.

I'm quite relaxed about giving a player pelters if he's not up to it, but Neal is nowhere near that place.

Having aspirations of signing a fifty million quid striker is ane entirely different matter. Aspire away.

I think this thread and its title stink to high heaven. It's little more than a catherdral of hate.

Too temperamental by far. Quick to blame others and slow to accept his own responsibility. He can't cope with his own frustration at coming up short all the time. Its catching up with him. His anxiety makes him take wrong options and snatch at chances. We need better at the moment.

Good Premier League player and very important to the team. Just look at the game against Chelsea, night and day without and with Maupay. For 75 minutes, each time the boys won the ball (which was a lot since it was a defensively great performance) had no one to play it to and every bit of pressure against their defenders were toothless. Then Maupay comes in and suddenly there is always someone to pass in the opposition half, with Maupay finding spaces in between the lines that Trossard, Welbeck and Macallister could only dream of having the game intelligence to figure out. The man also knows how to apply pressure against defenders in a efficient way, immediatly almost creating a goal for Lallana.

Someone with his football brain got very good chances of turning from a good to a great player. A bit more composure and he will be seen as one of the better strikers in the league (tbf partly because the league is not exactly crowded with good strikers atm).

Well, its your opinion that he is up to it. Others think differently. His record is poor this season. Its not just a few games, its all season. If he keeps missing chances, fans are going to have a go at him. Its fractions at this level and that was demonstrated last night. A perfect ball from Bissouma. Just hit it. A momentary deliberation and it was gone. The Ali J cross. Yes, hard driven. Yes, slightly behind him but strikers at this level have to find a way to turn that in. Others would have done.
We have all been patient with him but he is his own worst enemy. He plays on his own nerves all the time and with too much anxiety. Getting too wrapped up in missed chances, so when the next one comes around, he snatches at it. He isn't the only forward player we have. GP needs to keep rotating until we find the combination that best suits our style.

There’s a lot to admire with Maup, good little character, fighter, and works very unselfishly for the team.

But do you really think there are no better strikers we could recruit for the club?

I would still keep him, but I think he shouldn’t be our main man all the time.

Vardy, Iheanacho, DCL, Watkins, Wilson, Ings, Jimenez, Bamford, Aubameyang, Lacazette, Kane, Salah, Mane, Giroud, Werner, Cavani, Rashford, Greenwood, Jesus, Aguerro.....just 20 to start with, all better than Maupay. Then there is a further list that are probably on a par with him.

It’s unlikely we could afford any of these players or their salaries !

There probably is but that goes for every position. Problem is that it really isnt easy. Maupay got 18 goals in 68 PL appearances and while those numbers are not fantastic, its also very difficult to find someone who would guarantee/be very likely to outscore him. I'm sure the club is looking though and if they find some affordable striker that is obviously superior to Neal, then of course they wont hesitate.

Young players coming through now got Messi / C Ronaldo as their idols though, there's an overload of great LW and RWs coming through while in the CF position there's more good clubs than good players. Any decent centre forward coming through will immediatly attract a large number of clubs so currently its the most difficult position to improve.

I see just four playing at a club at our level though, and is there a single Albion fan who thought Bamford would be anything more than useless at this level pre season? Is Watkins actually better than Maupay? Ings wants out now he’s proved semi fitness too.

Keep ‘em coming

My point was that if he is dismissed from consideration for selection we can't sell him now and . . . . just read my post.

I didn't say he is up to it. He was up to it and he may be up to it again. Hearer went 10 consecutaive games for England without scoring, once. Throwing Neal under a bus and into the reserves with a view to selling him in the summer seems, well, ****ing stupid, would be my take.

Edit - but as I also said, I may well not pick him for the next game. Not sure, but maybe...

While I dont agree with some of those, its not secret there are better strikers than Maupay in the Premier League. Its a bit of a "no shit" fact and pretty much whoever gets signed, there will be a list of strikers better than him. But Maupay is younger than most of those and I think he could turn into a top 10 PL striker.

I have always loved his commitment and you can see from his Brentford goals video that he is a decent striker. I have backed him for nearly two seasons now but I am wavering at to whether he has the coolness to make it as a top PL striker. He has scored some great goals but this season especially he has fallen well short on chances converted. In fairness it took Kane more than a couple of seasons to turn into the flat track bully he is now, and in his favour Neal is nowhere near as big a cheat, fortunately

I love the guy but he has me screaming at him quite a bit recently  I love everything about him except his ability to miss chances recently. His English is also on a par with yours, which impresses me too. Not quite Orlandi though :lolol:

Procrastination is the thief of time is my favourite ever quote from a foreign footballer in England

I just think we need more alternatives. Look at the bench last night. Forward options: AJ and Connolly.

As a club, for how long we’ve been in the PL I think we can do much better than that as our Attacking options. I do agree though, I think for various reasons the pure striker position is one of most complex signings to get right in football.

It’s not easy, but the recruitment have to get this right if we want to move up as a club.

???

The the funniest thing, he’s probably our best striker so we have to play him, Welbeck isn’t bad but he’s never been a proven PL goal scorer in his career really and I don’t have any real faith in him to be honest. It’s just a sad state of affairs up top in our team, it has been all season. The statistics do not lie.

Perhaps the thread title was OTT but criticising a striker for missing countless sitters in vital games is exactly what any decent striker would expect, personally I think the thread title is a fair question if a striker is missing key chances you need to look at what else they provide the team: this season Maupays link up play hasn’t been great either. So what does he do?

As for aspirations of a 50m striker, I’m not delusional I don’t think anyone is, unless we sell a big player we aren’t spending anywhere near that on a striker but if we don’t address the goal scorer problem with a couple of more dynamic attacking players this summer we are going to be in trouble next season, again.

Even if we had the £'s a £50m striker isn't coming anywhere near us. We'll continue to trawl around in Europe/South America for a £20m 'gamble' ... it's as good as we can expect

I thought it was interesting that Potter called him out for his misses in his post-match interview. He never normally identifies specific players failings. I wonder if he has reached his tipping point with Maupay.

But he still kept him on.

Who knows if Potter has reached tipping point with Maupay, but I know I have. Since the start of the year I've become more and more frustrated with his performance - he seems to want two touches to set himself up to shoot - and all too often his first touch is something he has to chase after. If Connolly had stayed fit, I honestly think that if he'd played all the minutes that Maupay did, he would have scored more goals than Maupay (and I say that while still maintaining he should go out on loan to the Championship - or even League 1 - next season, whether he likes it or not).
