national anthem

For inspiring national anthems, I would go for Le Marseillaise or Irelands Call.
A pedant writes ...

Ireland's Call isn't a national anthem. It's the rugby anthem of the Irish Rugby Football Union, who, of course, do not represent a nation.

Come the day and come the hour
Come the power and the glory
We have come to answer our country's call
From the four proud provinces of Ireland

Ireland, Ireland
Together standing tall
Shoulder to shoulder
We'll answer Ireland's call

Completely inappropriate to sang by an English team because it isn't the English anthem...

.. because we haven't got one.

Not sure that Scotland or Wales have them "officially" though, unless someone can correct me.

Personally, I'd go for Waterloo Sunset by the Kinks. If we can't have that Jerusalem.

When sung properly...

If that's doesn't make the hairs on your neck stand up,I doubt your humanity. It's just that footballers now are so detached from where they came from, few have the pride the 96 lot did. Look at Southgate, Shearer & Pearce. And Tony Adams arching his back and bellowing it out. Because then playing for your country was the finest honour you could have. now it's the Champions League.

I think all the naysayers are missing the point.

It's not about whether you like the tune or the words, it's about standing together and belting it out. Forget the Queen or the country, it's about the people next to you at the time. We could make up a song about cucumbers or have a Drum & Bass track for all I care, as long as everyone gets behind it. GSTQ allows that to happen.

People not joining in because of the words or the tune are the metaphorical person at Christmas who sits in the corner sad while everyone else is having fun together, because they don't like kids games.

Good point about standing together and belting out a song. Supporters singing at matches is exactly that and there's no feeling like it in the world. Tribalism at it's very best for me. Singing up,especially when conceding a goal for instance sends a great message to the team and always makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up as it fills me with an immense sense of pride.

You say that GSTQ allows that to happen. Unfortunately it does not, and that's the big problem. For those who detest the monarchy and all it stands for, there's not a chance of joining in on this one. It's a real shame as it doesn't make those people any less passionate and proud of their country, just not willing to ask God to save a parasite.

Fair point, but still an inspiring anthem. Let's do what Scotland did and commission someone to come up with something (without the need to slag off a fellow state of the UK!)

Who would you ask to carry out such a huge task?

We don't need to get a stirring anthem written. We already have one. This:

Spandau Ballet - Gold

Jerusalum is a good shout but it'd be weird having the capital city of another country as the title of our national anthem. Also it's not technically a hymn as it's not a prayer to God.

I had a similar concern with 'Vindaloo' as an anthem being from another country.
