I think all the naysayers are missing the point.

It's not about whether you like the tune or the words, it's about standing together and belting it out. Forget the Queen or the country, it's about the people next to you at the time. We could make up a song about cucumbers or have a Drum & Bass track for all I care, as long as everyone gets behind it. GSTQ allows that to happen.

People not joining in because of the words or the tune are the metaphorical person at Christmas who sits in the corner sad while everyone else is having fun together, because they don't like kids games.

And yet top club teams, who sing no anthem or song of any kind, seem to get by, no, thrive as a team unit without 'playing games at christmas'

Have to give it to France. That is a good national anthem. As a rule I dont like many of them, but the French anthem is a great listen

There are far too many words in Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem for the players to remember.

They cannot remember what they are supposed to be doing on the field of play half of the time, so how are they going to remember all of that as well?

I would go with something simple personally - like the theme tune to Teletubbies for example. Or Graham Swann's sprinkler impersonation.

Alternatively, someone can make a simple way to remember it like they have done with the SA National Anthem:

That is for those who believe in there ever being a Jesus, which many dont, but Land of Hope and Glory is about our land so much more appropriate. I would sooner honour the Queen than as it is rather than Jerusalem, granted a reasonable tune but to me it is not a patriotic tune for England and doesnt make your hair stand up like GSTQ or L of H & G. Sorry to disagree with your idea.
'Land of Hope and Glory' is about Britain, not England. It can't be the 'English' anthem for the same reason the 'Rule Britannia' can't be. Like it or not out of the classics 'Jerusalem' is the best English anthem as it is specifically about England, however like you I'm not a massive fan of it - and none of them mean as much to me as GOSBTS.

I believe they do. Still doesn't make it the 'right' anthem though - just 'differently wrong'!

I don't care what the anthem is or how many players sing it or don't, all i care about is how well the players perform on the pitch.

If someone doesn't sing the anthem in the line up prior to the game it doesn't mean that they will play poorly in that match or lack passion in their play, if someone else does sings it, it doesn't mean they will play unbelievably well. If the team all sing it it doesn't mean we will win, or if they don't sing it we will lose as a result. All it really indicates is whether that player has or hasn't joined in and sung it - so what, how cares, move on, its like saying the results are down to the patterns that the groundsmen have used when preparing the pitch or whether the turnstyle operators smile at you when you go in to watch a match.

I still think Land iof Hope and Glory is much more appropriate

Absolutely. GSOGQ is dire and a dirge. I cringe when I hear it! Land of Hope and Glory is rousing and emotive, unlike the latter.

I would go with I vow to thee my country as I love it and the composer of the music Gustav Holst, one of my favourite pieces of music Jupiter from The Planet Suite, although not English is buried in Chichester Cathedral.

Gustav Holst, despite his name was English (British) born in Cheltenham 1874. His parents were from Riga in Latvia, but he was naturalised and proud to live here.

My view is that we need a English anthem for English sporting events, with GSTQ at British sporting events. After all the sweatys sing Flower of Scotland the Welsh Land of my Fathers, why do we use the British Anthem?

Recent polls around the time of the Royal wedding still show approximately 1 in 4 people do not support the monarchy in this country. If you add that to those people who do not believe in god it is hardly surprising that there is a lack of universal support for an anthem which involves one saving the other. National anthems should reflect an ideal which unifies the country not divides it.

How about Vera Lynns There'll Always be an England.
Hmm. It as has possibilities, we could sing a cut-down version (leaving out the bit about empire), something like:

"There'll always be an England
While there's a country lane,
Wherever there's a cottage small,
Beside a field of grain.
There'll always be an England,
And England shall be free,
If England means as much to you,
As England means to me!

We could make up a song about cucumbers...

That would certainly liven up these occasions. I reckon its worth a go.

If we're not having the cucumber song, then there are two options:

1) Land Of Hope And Glory

2) Extend the borders of Sussex to cover the whole country and then use GOSBTS.

Still think the Italian anthem is my favourite, but having Verdi Puccini etc in your national psyche, you were always going to get a brilliant tune.

However, elgar, benjamin brittain, Handel finzi should have produced something better than the dirge we have now
