Fcku Swanny, back on topic, I really don't get why this transfer is even being discussed - I must be missing something (like a real good reason why one of our most talented player should leave and for such a derisory sum)???

I suspect the short answer is, well the short answer. He's too short for Hürzelerball.
Not aimed at you personally but it seems a lot of people are assuming we're going to play the exact same way St Pauli did last season, but I don't think people should take that for granted.

He could be a very tactically flexible coach who just happened to stick with a particular formation last season because retaining the flow was more important than tactical adaption, which is sometimes the case and sometimes not.

Well we know everyone can leave for a price, and that price depends on Tony's algorithm and contract length. But obviously there are tiers for:
We actively want rid of this player.
We don't need this player.
Squad player
Usual first team player
Essential player.
No way is WB in the first category, and I'm pretty sure Fab doesn't have him in the last.
For category 2 £12 million still seems low, but could see him going for £15 if no other interest appears before end of window.

Yeh, I always find this stuff interesting.

So I don't think a manager should just transplant the way he played with Team A onto Team B when he takes over there. Tactical strategy depends at least in part of what players you have at your disposal as well as the standard and style of your opposition. It could also be that there are some things he wanted to do tactically in his previous work, which he couldn't do because of the limitations of the players or injury etc

So I'm also wary of just watching St Pauli and working out which Brighton player is the closest equivalent and assuming it will be identical.

But there will surely be some discernible similarities. We've recruited him because of his philosophy. My guess is that we won't see as many differences in playing style from last season as is assumed on here. Wednesday will be fascinating

Bang! And the dirt is gone.
I haven't been watching intently, but hasn't PBOBE said in an interview today that we are looking to keep Gilmour? Although I appreciate he isn't going to tell the media that we are looking to off Billy (not in the Sopranos sense), for obvious reasons, even if we were.

I think he is tactically flexible BUT the signing of Mats Wieffer absolutely gives him the chance to stick a deep-lying central midfielder in defence as he is probably better in the air than Webster, Igor or Veltman. That was a big part of his St Pauli tactics.

The other midfield part is the requirement to score and assist. The likes of Groß, Buonanotte and perhaps Enciso would be able to do this. With Gilmour and Moder, the jury is out.

We almost have the squad to play his St Pauli tactics. It would be a little odd for him to find other formations and styles based on the requirement to fit Gilmour or Moder into his plans. Especially with Gomez on the horizon.

More like £25 million would be nearer the asking price

We NEED to be tactically flexible. Otherwise you will be found out, as I felt we were under RDZ eventually as no matter who was'nt available he stayed with plan A.

The teams that can play one way and not care are the likes of Man City because they have overall better players, and match officals who are influenced by who they are and 'Pep'.

If Wieffer is going to be so key to playing a particular way then we're a bit f***ed again when he's not available. See 23/24 and wingers. So we need to be able to adapt.

Yes. Said we'd rejected an offer from Napoli, hadn't heard any more from them and we want to keep him (and went on to say how popular he is around the squad, training ground etc).

I think the verdict is definitely in for Gilmour.

Offensively he's ineffective at this level.

He's played nearly 5000 Premier League minutes.

He's scored no goals and made just 3 assists, 1 per season for the last 3 seasons.

Agree with this. I really like him and enjoy watching him play, but I have struggled to think of one game where he was the main difference why we got something out of the game (unlike say Gross, Mac, Caicedo or Biss or even Mwepu).
I would be sorry to see him go, but suspect he may end up benched a lot this season, as he was for RdZs first season).

Stats for last season. So not too shabby

It's just not his role though. His role is to provide cover when the full backs storm on. It's ok to have some players who are positionally disciplined

I agree, but only if they are decent defensively. Billy ranks very poorly there as well.

I like the player. He lacks physicality sure and the comments about his actual attacking output are fair.

His role is to get the ball and move it quickly and accurately and keep us ticking over in midfield. I thought he did a great job for his manager last season. He would have massively benefitted from a Caicedo or Bissouma alongside him to win the duels, but that is hardly his fault.

You can tell his class, just by the way he plays with his head up. Always has a great awareness of what is around him.

Not that i'm imploring the club to keep him. They know what we need best. I'm imploring Brighton fans that if he goes, he goes with our best wishes and respect and that he's warmly welcomed back should our paths ever cross again.
